Richard Albert Downey was born on 16 November 1882 in Madoc, Hastings, Ontario to Richard Downey (1848-1928) & Ann Fleming (1857-1933). Richard had two brothers, William Henry (b 1875) & Andrew Theophillus (1878-1936) and one sister, Ann Elizabeth (1880-1906). Richard’s father was a farmer in Huntingdon, Hastings, Ontario during Richard’s teenage years. Richard obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree and took up teaching.
In 1914 Richard moved to Saskatoon and took up the post of Principal at King George School on Ave K, Saskatoon. He lived at 204 5th Avenue N until his marriage to Alberta Georgiana Amy (1891-1959) in June 1922.
Richard and Alberta then lived at 825 7th Avenue. After thirteen years as Principal of King George School, Richard became Principal of Wilson School in 1928.
The following year the couple moved to 817 6th Avenue N, but only until 1930 when they moved again, to 626 9th Avenue. Richard was Principal of Wilson School for twenty-nine years until his retirement in 1958.
Richard had served as School Principal in Saskatoon for a total of forty-two years.
Richard & Alberta moved to Long Beach, California during his retirement. Richard died in Long Beach on 23 February 1959 after 37 years of marriage. Alberta died just 7 days later, on 1 March 1959. They are both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
