Verna Lorene Down was born on 31 August 1906 in Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada to William Henry Down (1878-1959) & Edith Dawes (1874-1950). The family residence at the time of her birth was 157 N Brock St, Sarnia. Verna had three brothers, Gordon Stanley (1900-1955), Harold Franklin (1907-2001) & Douglas Emerson (1912-1981) and two sisters, Winnifred Edith (1902-1953) & Beatrice Helen (1910-2007).
Verna’s father worked as a machinist for the railroad. By 1911 the family had moved from Sarnia, to Humboldt, a town about 115km east of Saskatoon. There is no evidence that the family ever lived in Saskatoon. However it is more than likely that they would visit Saskatoon for shopping expeditions.
Verna married William Lloyd Andrews Pope (1905-1988) on 22 January 1931 in Humboldt. William was a lawyer and he and Verna moved first to Rosthern about 80km NW of Humboldt and later to York, Ontario. They had moved to Mississauga, Ontario at the time of William’s death in 1988. Verna died on 14 December 1998 also in Mississauga, Ontario.
