Albert William Doraty was born on 15 July 1866 in Napean, Carleton, Ontario, Canada and married Ida Elizabeth Argue on 7 May 1890 in Carleton. Ida had been born on 2 April 1866 in Russell, Ontario. Albert was a blacksmith at the time of his marriage and they were both Methodists.
Albert and Ida had six sons, Harvey Argue (Harry) born on 10 January 1891 in Stittsville, Carleton, Thomas Ira born on 28 January 1893, Albert Clark born on 10 January 1895, Mcguire (Mac) born on 8 September 1897, George Reginald born on 21 February 1903 & Kenneth Edward 23 June 1905 (& a twin brother who died at birth) and one daughter, Zella Christina born on 24 November 1899.
Albert & Ida farmed in Goulburn, Carleton and were living on 1st Ave, Moose Jaw as a machinist in 1916. By this time, Harry and Mac had left home and lived together in Saskatoon from 1912. Harry initially worked as a realtor for Ottawa Realtor Co and Mac worked as a clerk at the ‘Daily Star’. Harry married Florence "Gertrude" Kerr on 25 June 1913 in Carleton. Gertrude was born on 25 January 1891 in Bruce, Ontario to John Brydon Kerr (b 1864) & Catherine (Katie) Merriefield (1867-1894). Gertude had two brothers, Allan Wesley (b 1889) & George Bent (b 1894). After Katie died in 1894, John married her sister Martha and they had one son, John Ormond (1898-1970).
Mac worked as a clerk on the ‘Daily Star’ until he enlisted in the CEF on 31 January 1916 in Drumheller, Alberta. Mac was killed in action on 16 September 1917 in the vicinity of Lens, Pas-de-Calais, France whilst acting as company runner. It is assumed that his family placed his name on the quilt as an act of remembrance.
After their marriage, Harry and Gertrude lived at 219 9th St, Saskatoon. It appears that they had a daughter Audrey Gertrude who died on 7 July 1914 probably at birth and was (re-)buried alongside her mother. The same year Harry joined forces with George A & Richard M Argue, perhaps cousins of his wife, to form Argue & Doraty Realtors at 106 Cobbold Block, 153 2nd Ave S in Saskatoon. In 1917, Harry joined Cruise, Tufts & Lindal, barristers & solicitors as a law student. Harry & Gertrude had a son Mac born in 1918 and it seems likely that Gertrude who died on 15 December 1918 died in childbirth. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Harry became a barrister in 1919 with Cruise, Tufts & Lindal. He married Mary Elizabeth MacDonald on 4 October 1920 in New Westminster, British Columbia. Harry remained with this company as it evolved into Cruise, Robinson & Doraty until 1936.
Harry’s brother Kenneth Edward played (Ice) hockey for the Toronto Male Leafs and his claims to fame include scoring the wining goal in the early hours of 4 April 1933 in the Maple Leafs match against the Boston Bruins after 164 minutes & 46 seconds. At the time this was the longest game ever played in the National Hockey League.
