GEORGE SUTHERLANDDONN, ETHEL EMILY DONN née GRANT and HENRIETTA DONN

George Sutherland Donn was born on 1 August 1867 in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland to Alexander Donn (1840-1890) & Ann Sutherland (1845-1875). George had three sisters, Janet (b 1868), Isabella (1870-1900) & Jessie (1871-1902) and two brothers, William born on 11 January 1872 but died on 30 June the same year & William born on 14 December 1872, died on 15 May 1894.

George came out to Canada in about 1890 and was working as a domestic servant in 1891 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He married Emily Ethel Grant on 29 December 1897 in Brandon, Manitoba. Emily was born on 16 March 1875 in Wentworth, Ontario to Charles Roy Grant (1844-1906) & Margaret (Maggie) Girvin (1850-1905). Emily had four sisters, Elizabeth Isabella (b 1873), S S (b 1880), Ada (b 1882) & Edna (b 1888) and two brothers, Charles Frederick (b 1877) & Roy S (b 1885).

After their marriage, George & Emily lived in Brandon where George was a farmer. In 1901 George’s sister Jessie is living with them in Elton, Brandon. In 1911 they were living at 438 5th Ave N, Saskatoon, had let rooms to three others and George was a land inspector, a job which he held for the next 7 years. In December 1912, George & Emily travelled to England, returning via New York the following March.

In 1916, they were still at the same address but without any roomers. Henrietta Donn aged 25 was living with them and was listed as their daughter. Since she was not included in any earlier census records presumably she was adopted. The census record listed her as a school teacher, but in Henderson’s city directory she was recorded as a clerk in the Post Office from 1916-1918. No further trace of Henrietta has been found.

George & Emily continued to live in Saskatoon at various addresses: 319 5th Ave N, #2 Sommerfield Block on Broadway and finally 216 25th St E. They moved back to Brandon and George died on 25 June 1929. No record of Emily’s death has been found.
