EFFIE ESTELLA DUNNING née BADGLEY

Effie Estella Badgley was born in October 1875 in Thurlow, Ontario to Ryerson Badgley (186-1921) & Marian Lavina Lott (1855-1889). Effie had two sisters, Mildred May (Millie) (b 1877) and Helen Josephine (b 1889) and one brother, Carl Lott Badgley (1902-1973). Effie grew up on her father’s farm in Hastings and married James Albert Dunning on 16 February 1898. Albert was born in September 1871 in Huntington, Ontario to John Dunning (1833-1920) & Sarah Suttle (1842-1921). Albert had six sisters, Mary Eleanor (b 1858), Eliza Jane (b 1860), Margaret Ann (b 1961), Catherine (b 1866), Mabel (1876-1898) & Helen (b 1883) and five brothers, Hugh Robertson (1863-1933), John Suttle (1864-1936), Samuel (b 1870), Francis Graham (b 1873) & Joseph Alfred (Fred) (1878-1948).

Albert and Effie first appeared in Saskatoon in 1910 when they moved into 802 5th Avenue N which was to be their family home for the next 43 years. Albert’s brother John was already established in Saskatoon and had set up possibly Saskatoon’s first ‘bus’ service transporting goods and passengers between Saskatoon and the railroad station a few miles to the south. Albert’s brother Fred and his wife Gertrude also lived at 802 5th Avenue N until 1912.

Albert, John & Fred ran a horse dealership at 322 Ave B South. Eventually Albert ran the business on his own and it gradually evolved to include a livery stable and a feed store.

Albert & Effie had two daughters, Gladys (b 1907) & Phyllis (b 1913). Albert retired in 1953 aged 82 years. He died on 16 May 1959 after over sixty years of marriage and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. Effie died the following year on 10 January and is buried alongside Albert.
