KARL “ERNEST” WATSON TATE

Karl “Ernest” Watson Tate was born 14 April 1910 in Langley Park, Lanchester, Durham, England to Alfred Ernest Tate (1880-1946) and Rhoda Bickle (1881-1975). His siblings were: Ivy Ernestine (1906-1944), Lily Elfreda (1909-1998), Dorothy Violet (1912-1989), Alfred Ernest (1913-2007), John William (1916-1993), Rhoda Victoria (1918-1994), Edith Caroline (1921-2004), George Douglas Watson (1922-1943) and Irene May (1924-1988).

Rhoda, Ivy, Lily and Ernest left Bristol, England on SS ‘Royal George’ on 1 November 1911 and landed in Montreal, Quebec on the 10 November 1911. Their destination was Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where they were to meet Alfred who was already in Canada. Alfred E Tate’s name first appeared in a Saskatoon Henderson City Directory in 1912. He was an engineer living at 503 ½ Ave F South. In 1916 the Tate family was living at 405 Ave K North. Their name disappeared from the Henderson Directory in 1918.

By 1921 they had moved to New Westminster, British Columbia. Ernest married Rhoda Harper Coutts (1912-2000) on 30 January 1935 in New Westminster. They had one son, James Ernest Tate (1942-2006). Ernest died 18 June 1996 in Nanaimo, British Columbia and Rhoda died 11 May 2006 in Duncan, British Columbia.

There is considerable doubt that Ernest Tate was the person named on the quilt. This signature was extremely difficult to interpret and at first we interpreted it as Tate. However, the last two letters looked more like ke than te and the first letter was not a typical T. The small circle at the top suggested a P. An Ernest William Pike was also living in Saskatoon at quilt signing time and the last three letters in the signature were very similar in appearance to those in the last name of Maurice Pike who signed the quilt a few names down from this signature. Perhaps the signature was more likely to be that of E W Pike, but we added the E W Tate information as well as there is some chance that the name belonged to the eight year old child, Ernest Tate.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Tate Tree.
