THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MARTHA ANN TAYLOR née PENTLAND

Martha Ann Pentland was born on 29 January 1851 at Cavan Farm, Ontario to James Pentland (1798-1856) and Anna Tressing/Trush/Frisk (1815-1888). The surname of her mother varied on various records created for her siblings and one could seldom view the original record for spelling errors. Her siblings were: William (b 1833), Ann (b 1835), George (1838-1912), John Kenney (1840-1886), Frances (1842-1932), James (1846-1909), Elizabeth (1848-1890), Mary (Mercy) (b 1851), Edward Boyd (1851-1913), and Joseph (1853-1934). It is also possible that all children born after 1845, including Martha, had a mother named Ann Lawson. On the death record of Martha's brother, James, that was the name given for his mother. No record for a later child could be found where the mother's maiden name was recorded to ensure that the name given on that death record was not an error.

The Pentland family lived in Manvers, Ontario in 1861 and in Collingwood, Ontario in 1871. Martha married John Johnston Taylor on 24 January 1877 in Euphrasia Township, Ontario. John was born in Bolton, Ontario in August of 1852 to Henry Taylor (b 1821) and Elizabeth (b 1823).

1852 and 1861 census records were found in Albion, Ontario (birth place listed on his marriage record) that had a John of the right age with parent's names that matched those given on his marriage record. Information on his ancestry could not be verified in other trees or with any other documentation. If this was his family, then his siblings were: Abraham (b 1845), Robert (b 1849), Henry (b 1850), Joseph (b 1852), Mary Ann (b 1857) and William (b 1859).

Children born to John and Martha were: Mary Mabel (1878-1948), Edith Almeda (1879-1914), Edna May (1881-1948), Edgar (1882-1883), Wilford Edward (Wilbert) (1884-1942), Minnie Amelia (b 1886) and Lily Jane (b 1889). In 1891 and 1901, the Taylor family was living in Assiginack, Algoma, Ontario. According to John's obituary, the family moved from Manitowaning Island, Ontario to Aberdeen, Saskatchewan seven years before his death which would have been 1910.

John was a postmaster and general store keeper. The Taylor family was living in Aberdeen at the time of the 1911 and 1916 censuses and that is where they were living when John died on 3 August 1917 in St Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. Martha died on 1 June 1921 at an unknown location. Both were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Although we could locate several J Taylors we could find no other J J Taylor with Saskatoon connections. Aberdeen is about 40 kms from Saskatoon. John Taylor's funeral was held from the home of W A Best who lived in Saskatoon at that time and Woodlawn Cemetery is in Saskatoon. Martha Taylor, as the wife of John Johnston Taylor, was the best candidate that we could find for that signature.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Taylor 6 Tree.
