THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MILDRED GLADYS TAYLOR

Mildred Gladys Taylor was born on 16 September 1880 in Eaton, Compton, Quebec to Edwin Augustus Taylor (1854-1939) and Margaret Sophina Nutbrown (1855-1937). Her siblings were: Harold (b 1879), Ernest Stanley (1882-1891), Winnifred (1883-1891), Bertha Anna (1886-1921), Lena M (b 1891) and Joseph Everett (1895). She lived in Eaton with her family until at least 1891.

By 1901 the family had moved to Stanstead Plain, Quebec where Mildred, still living with her parents and siblings, was a teacher. The 1911, 1916 & 1921 censuses identified her as a trained nurse, lodging in the home of Dr Frank Fourney and his wife in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Like Mildred, the Fourney's had previously lived in Stanstead.

Mildred married Archibald Stevens Varney on 8 November 1921 in Montreal, Quebec. He was born in 1878 in Quebec to Simon A Varney (b 1851) and Katherine Maine (b 1853). He had previously married Bertha Anna Taylor and they had two children, Kenneth Augustus (b 1917) & Maxwell Everette (1919-1943). Bertha died on 4 July 1921 and Archibald married her sister, Mildred on 8 November the same year. Archibald died on 23 October 1930 in Windsor, Quebec.

It is troubling that all records, including her birth and marriage record, gave Mildred's name as Mildred Gladys Taylor. The signature on the quilt was Gladyes Mildred Taylor. The ‘adyes’ of Gladyes is embroidered with a different thread from the remainder of the signature. There is some doubt that the woman from the family discussed above was the signer. However, as both the names Gladys and Mildred are relatively rare and we could find no other candidate with both names, we felt she was the most likely candidate for the signature.
