THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

GEORGE ARTHUR TERRY, MARGARET TERRY and AGNES GREEN

George Arthur Terry was born on 23 November 1886 in Victoria, Ontario to Arthur Browning Terry (1860-1924) and Annie Margaret Fox (b 1859). His siblings were: Victor Batoche (1885-1974), Lillian Alberta Clare (b 1889), Schnsey Lorne Verral (1890), Laura V (b 1890), Frederick Fox (b 1894), Rose M (b 1896) and Samuel Scott (1902-1975). The 1891 and 1901 census records found him living in Lindsay, Ontario with his parents and siblings. Judging by the names of the children in the 1901 census records and their ages, it appeared that some of his siblings must have died by 1901 and that Lorne and Laura may possibly have been the same child. By 1911, George and his brother, Batoche, were living at 437 3rd Ave N in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

In 1915, George married Margaret Katherine (Maggie) Rutherford. She was born on 14 January 1885 in Bruce, Ontario to David A Rutherford (b 1861) and Katherine (Katie) Gillies (b 1866). Her siblings were: Agnes Gillies (1886-1940), Millie Robena (Mildred) (b 1890), William James (b 1891), Robert Ernest (b 1896) and David Stewart (b 1900). In 1891, the Rutherford family was living in Eastnor, Ontario and in 1901, St Edmunds, Ontario. In 1911 Maggie and her sister, Mildred, were living at 211 4th Ave in Saskatoon. George and Maggie joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1915 and remained members until they died. In 1916, the couple was living in the Connaught Block, 247 3rd Ave S and George was a salesman of dry goods. All efforts to find them in the 1921 census failed. As only brothers and sisters were mentioned in their obituaries, it can be presumed that they had no children. George died on 27 March 1952 and Maggie on 10 November 1953. Both died in Saskatoon and were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bessie H Clarke who signed the same area of the quilt at the Terrys has the surname Terry in her ancestry. As the name Terry seemed to be fairly rare and relatives often signed near each other, it was speculated that the Terrys may have been related to Bessie. However, if there was a connection, it could not be discovered.

Agnes Gillies Rutherford, a sister of Maggie Rutherford who was discussed above, was born on 21 October 1886 in Bruce, Ontario. She married Charles Havelock Greene on 20 February 1911 in Toronto, Ontario. Charles was born on 14 September 1887 in Bath, New Brunswick to Caleb Joshua Greene (1860-1921) and Sarah Amanda Wilcox (1854-1938). His siblings were: Walter (b 1886) and Gordon Glen (1891-1953). By the time of the 1911 census, Agnes and Charles had moved to 107 20th St W in Saskatoon. They had three children: Maxine (b 1912), Mildred (b 1916) and Bruce (b 1918). In 1916 and 1921, the family was living at 1012 Melrose Ave, Saskatoon. Charles was a merchant of clothing. In 1916 the family identified as Baptist, but by 1921, they were Methodist. They never appeared on the roll of 3rd Ave Methodist Church, so must have belonged to a different church or never officially joined. Agnes died on 23 January 1940 in Victoria, British Columbia and she was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria. At the time of his death on 8 September 1971 in Victoria, Charles was married to Laura Martin.

There is concern that the Agnes discussed above was not the person who signed the quilt. All official records generated for this Greene family spell the name Greene and the signature on the quilt was clearly Green. However, an exhaustive search of Green families living in Saskatoon at the time the quilt was made offered no other candidates. It is possible that someone visiting the city signed it or that Agnes asked someone else to add her name to the quilt and they spelled the name wrongly.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Green/Terry Tree.
