ELSIE SUSANNAH and EDITH MAY TAYLOR
Elsie Susannah and Edith May Taylor were daughters of Alfred G Taylor (1860-1956) and Amy Mary Hooper (1860-1931). Elsie was born on 11 October 1896 in Turnbridge Wells, Kent England and Edith on 19 March 1902 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England.
In 1901 the family was living in Eastbourne, England. According to census records it would appear that Alfred and some of the older children, including Elsie, immigrated to Canada in 1905 and Amy and some of the younger ones, including Edith, came in 1907. In 1906 Alfred, Cleeve, Ernest, Ada and Elsie were enumerated in Nutana which is now part of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1911 Alfred, Mary, Elsie, Charles and Edith were living in Saskatoon and in 1916, the same family group, excluding Alfred, was living at 723 Ave N South in the same city.
Edith May Taylor was listed in the 1918 Saskatoon Henderson City Directory as a student living at 1118 Ave K South, Saskatoon with her sister above. Edith married Elwood Rae MacLeod (1903-1975) on 18 August 1930 in Saskatoon and she died on 11 July 1996 in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Elsie and Edith are two of several possible candidates for the EMS Taylor signature on the quilt. Like the others, none are strong candidates as only two of the three initials can be attributed to their given names. If one considers all of the initials for both of these women, it is of interest that all initials in the signature are present. Although we are not aware of anyone signing a combination of initials from two names, it is a possibility. If anyone is aware of one of these women having a third given name that fits the third initial we would be interested to hear about it.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Taylor 8 Tree.
Elsie Susannah Taylor was listed in the 1918 Henderson City Directory for Saskatoon as a stenographer working for Campbell, Wilson & Millar, wholesale grocers and was living at 1118 Ave K South, Saskatoon. Although the family could not be found in the 1921 census, according to the 1921 Saskatoon Henderson City Directory, at least some of the family was living at the Ave K South residence. Elsie married Leo D Campbell and she died on 16 January 1983 in Biggar, Saskatchewan.
