BENJAMIN EDWIN HILTON SUTHERLAND
Benjamin Edwin Hilton Sutherland was born in June of 1883 in Latheron, Caithness, Scotland to William Gunn Sutherland (1844-1927) and Margaret (Maggie) Brown Young (1851-1926). He had one sister, Janet Mary Alice Hilton Sutherland (1884-1963). In 1891, the Sutherland family was living at Estate Dunbeath, Latheron, Caithness and in 1901 Benjamin was a grocer's apprentice living with the Alexander Sinclair family in Wick, Caithness.
On 3 June 1904 Benjamin boarded SS ‘Laurentian’ and sailed from Glasgow, Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he disembarked on 13 June 1904. He gave his destination as Brandon, Manitoba. He had a grant (No 1745861) issued on 26 March 1909 for a homestead on NW-12-32-16-W3 in Mountain View RM No318. The file number for that homestead was 1205337. As it generally took 5 years to complete the terms necessary to get full title to a homestead, he must have begun working/living on his land in 1904, shortly after he arrived in Canada. At the time of the 1906 census, he was living on his homestead.
In 1908 his parents and sister sailed from Glasgow to Quebec City on SS ‘Ionian’. They gave their final destination as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. For some reason, Benjamin must have decided that he would prefer to farm in a different location. By 1911 he and his parents were living on separate homesteads in Milton RM. Benjamin had grants issued on 5 March 1913 on the SW & SE quarters of 24-29-27-W3 and William had a grant issued on 4 October 1913 on SW-25-29-27-W3. On 26 July 1919 Benjamin had another grant issued on NE-24-29-27-W3. All of these pieces of land were in Milton RM. They were still living on their homesteads at the time of the 1916 census. In the 1917 Saskatoon Henderson Directory, Benjamin and William were listed as living at 714 Ave F North. Benjamin was a shipper for a farm implement company, Can Fairbanks-Morse. Benjamin and his parents were living at 1117 Ave F North at the time of the 1921 census. In Benjamin's will (24 April 1929) bequests were made to his wife, Selina, and his daughter, born in 1924 (according to another family tree.)
Benjamin died on 29 April 1929 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, as were his parents.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Sutherland Tree.
