ARTHUR FRANCIS SMITH

Arthur Francis Smith was born on 29 April 1875 in Clerkenwell, London, England to William Francis John Smith (1841-1901) and Emma Basten (1838-1929). His family lived in St Mary's, Islington, London in 1881 and St Marks, Islington, London in 1891. By 1901, he was working as a commercial clerk and boarding with the Gadsby family in East Ham, Little Ilford, Essex, England. It may have been during this time that he met his future wife Emily Elizabeth Gadsby who was born in July of 1881 in Bromley, Middlesex, England to James Thomas Gadsby (1850-1926) and Mary Ann Casey (1848-1929). She was still living at home with her family in 1901 when Arthur was boarding with them. Emily's siblings were: Ada Sophia (1873-1949), Archibald James (1876-1899), Laura Annie (1881-1957), Edith Grace (1883-1956), Edward William (1886-1947) and James Thomas (1893-1964).

Arthur and Emily were married on 5 July 1901 in Ilford, England. By 1906 they had moved to St Boniface, Manitoba. According to Arthur's obituary, the family immigrated to Canada in 1906 and spent their first two years in Lanigan, Saskatchewan. Their children were: Francis Arthur Archibald (Frank) (1902-1987), Douglas Gordon (1912-1913) and Gordon Howard (1916-2003).

By 1911 the Smith family was living at 124 Ave C in Saskatoon and Arthur was working for a harness company. The family lived in various locations in and around Saskatoon. In 1915 they were at 1714 3rd Ave N; in 1916 on land in 37-5-W3, Cory, Saskatchewan; from 1918-1919 at 922 5th Ave N and from 1920-1922 at 1604 Lorne. According to Henderson Directory listings, Arthur was secretary-treasurer for Leathers and Sports Ltd over several years. He was also employed as a clerk at B R Masecar from 1918-1919 and a book keeper at J A Cooper Hardware from 1920-1922. Emily died on 26 February 1921 in Saskatoon and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arthur married Maggie May Carpenter (1891-1957) on 20 August 1926. They had a daughter, Betty Margaret (1929-2011). Arthur died on 15 June 1969 in Saskatoon and was also buried in Woodlawn.
