WILLIAM HENRY (HARRY) STEENSON
William Henry (Harry) Steenson was born on 30 November 1881 in Peel, Ontario to William Steenson (1852-1935) and Jane Bailey (1854-1941). His siblings were: Mabel (1877-1966), George (b 1879) and Mary (b 1879). He lived in Peel with his family until at least 1901. He married Margaret Cosford Wood (1882-1913) on 17 October 1908 in Waterloo, Ontario. They were living in Drayton, Ontario in 1911. His obituary indicated that he moved to Saskatoon in 1911.
The name Henry Steenson first appeared in a Saskatoon Henderson Directory in 1912 as a clerk at S T Lodge. Margaret died on 7 January 1913 in Wellington, Ontario. In 1913, Jane, Harry and Mabel were listed at 315 5th Ave N and in 1914, William, Harry and Mabel were at 1237 2nd Ave N, the same address where the family was enumerated in 1916. Harry continued to work as a clerk at Sydney T Lodge, Grocers. In 1921, he was still living with his family at 1231 2nd Ave and was working as a traveler/salesman with North West Biscuit Company. He likely married Gladys Mary E (Nan) Downey in about 1924 as that is the year that he was listed at a different address from his parents in the Henderson Directories. In 1924, he was living at 921 9th Ave and was in partnership with Wellington E McGill to form McGill and Steenson, Grocers. Gladys was born on 30 December 1903 in Simcoe, Ontario to William James S Downey (1872-1944) and Annetta Victoria Bruce (1874-1951). In 1924 William J Downey was a clerk at McGill and Steenson. This could possibly have been Gladys' father, but has not been verified. Harry and Gladys had three daughters: Elizabeth (Bette) and Audrey Fay (1929-2013) are now deceased. Harry Steenson died on 24 February 1974 in Saskatoon and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gladys likely died in March of 1995 as the Saskatoon Star Phoenix obituary index created by the Saskatoon Public Library listed Gladys E "Nan" Steenson in the 11 March 1995 edition, Page D1.
