SARAH ELIZA STEPHEN née MILLER
Sarah Eliza Miller was born on 22 October 1840 in Fall River, Nova Scotia to Phillip Miller (1810-1868) and Lucy Reeves (b 1810). Her siblings were: Gertrude (d 1933), Sophia Charlotte (1838-1909), Phillip (b 1842), Louisa (b 1843), Mary R (b 1845), Charles (b 1847) and James (b 1852). She married John Robert Stephen on 19 May 1863 in Fall River, Nova Scotia. John was born on 21 July 1841 in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia to Alexander Stephen and Jane Eliza Raine. Their children were: Gertrude Eugene (1864-1945), Frederick William (1867-1890), Charles Philip (1868-1952), Alexander Norman (1870-1964), May Elizabeth (1873-1944), Sidney John (1876-1971) and Ralph Melburne (1879-1951).
In 1871 and 1881, the Stephen family lived in Truro Road, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. In 1901, 1911 and 1921 they were in Fall River. Their son, Ralph, married Annie May James (1880-1968) on 12 August 1903 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. By 1916, they were living at 824 Ave B North, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They were still in Saskatoon at 606 28th St W in 1921. Ralph and Annie's children were: Raymond Paul James (b 1904), Jessie Edora May (b 1906), John Richard (b 1906), Clarence William (b 1911) and Cora Mary (b 1918).
Although there is no evidence that Ralph's parents ever visited Saskatoon, the only candidate that could be found for the S Stephen signature was Sarah Eliza Stephen, Ralph's mother. We suppose that she may have visited her son and his family in Saskatoon during the time that the quilt was being made.
Sarah & John both died in Fall River, Sarah on 18 March 1941 and John on 25 August 1930.
