HENRY STEVENSON, AMELIA SELINA STEVENSON née MANTLE and
FRANCIS STEVENSON
Francis Stevenson was born on 17 November 1878 in Nottinghamshire, England to Henry Stevenson (1846-1927) and Amelia Selina Mantle (1847-1930). His father, Henry, was born on 1 July 1846 in Arnold, Nottinghamshire to Richard Stevenson (1803-1888) and Hannah Denham (1803-1875) and his mother, Amelia, was born in the third quarter of 1848 to John Mantle (1810-1890) and Selina (1816-1859). Henry and Amelia were married in the first quarter of 1871. Their other children were: Richard Ernest (1872-1944), Emma L (b 1874), John Henry (b 1876), and Harold (b 1884). The Stevenson family lived in Nottingham, England until at least 1901 where Henry was a fishmonger and fruit seller. Francis boarded SS 'Tunisian' in Liverpool England on 24 April 1902 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on 3 May 1902. He gave his final destination as Calgary Alberta. In 1906 he was living in Calgary with his brother John Henry and his family. His parents boarded SS 'Kensington' in Liverpool, England on 20 September 1907 and arrived in Montreal, Quebec on 28 September 1907. They gave their final destination as Calgary, Alberta. This likely meant that at least one of their sons was still living in Calgary at that time.
Francis, John Henry and their father Henry all filed for homesteads in the RM of Britannia, Saskatchewan, No 502. Francis had a grant issued on SE-14-51-27-W3 on 1 November 1911. Henry had a grant issued on a homestead SE-10-51-27-W3 on 21 Sept 1911 and John Henry on NE-10-51-27-W3 on 14 March 1912. As it usually took about five years to complete the conditions required to get full title to a homestead, they likely moved to that area of Saskatchewan shortly after Henry and Amelia arrived in Canada. By 1911, all were living in one household on section 10.
By 1916, Francis and his parents had moved to 415 25th St E, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and were living at 731 Temperance St in 1921. There are two WWI enlistment records for Francis, one dated on 16 June 1916 and one dated on 17 February 1918. He was listed as being in active service in the 1917 Saskatoon Henderson Directory. Both of these documents gave his address as YMCA, Hut #3, Bramshott. His occupation was given as an organist and choirmaster. In the 1919 Saskatoon Henderson Directory, Francis was listed as the organist for 3rd Ave Methodist Church. His father and mother appeared on the roll of that same church in 1920. Henry and Amelia died in Saskatoon on 3 September 1927 and 22 April 1930, respectively. Both were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Francis died on 4 November 1950 in Victoria, British Columbia. He was single.
