SARAH JANE, HENRY ARCHIBALD (HARRY) and JOHN LEWIS STEWART
Sarah Jane Stewart was born on 31 October 1872 in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario to Angus Stewart (1827-1896) and Sarah McNeil (1834-1909). Her siblings were: Angus Garibaldi (b 1860), Henry Archibald (Harry) (1863-1921), Peter Donald (1865-1945), John Lewis (b 1867), Ann Maria (b 1870), Robert Boyd (b 1875) and William (b 1877). Henry, John and Robert all became medical doctors. At the time of the 1881 and 1891 censuses, the Stewart family was living in Kinloss, Bruce County, Ontario. In 1901 Sarah was a widow and she and several of her children, including Henry and Sarah, were living in St Thomas, Ontario. At this time, Henry and Sarah Jr were school teachers.
After the death of her mother, in 1909, Sarah moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the time of the 1911 census, she was a school teacher at King Edward public school and was boarding with the W H Cleveland family at 517 24th St E. In 1916, Sarah was a school teacher boarding with Neil & Nellie McKeller and family at 437 4th Ave N. It was interesting to note that another quilt signer, Eva Millar was also a teacher boarding in the same household. 1921 found Sarah at the same residence, but she was now boarding with Elizabeth Cunningham and her son. Sarah's brother Peter, a doctor, was boarding in the same household. According to her obituary, it was 1921 when Sarah started university with the intention of training to become a doctor. She abandoned her studies when her brother, Henry, became seriously ill. Sarah served on the public school board for three terms and was on the provincial executive of the Saskatchewan Liberal Women's Association. She was associated with many organizations and shortly before her death had become a life member of the National Council of Women. At the time of her death, only her brother, William, formerly a farmer in the Tisdale district was still alive. She never married and died on 8 April 1946 in Saskatoon. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Henry Archibald Stewart was born on 10 November 1863 in Ontario. In 1911 he was living at 321 3rd Ave in Saskatoon and was a physician. In 1916, he was living at 115 20th St with his brother, Peter, who was also a physician. The last listing for him in a Saskatoon Henderson Directory was 1920 when he was living at 117a 20th St with Peter. He died on 8 June 1921 in Rochester, Olmstead, Minnesota and was buried in South Kinloss Cemetery, Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario - the same cemetery where his parents were buried.
John Lewis Stewart was born on 4 July 1867 in Ontario. He married Clarissa Victoria (Clara) Lindsay on 28 December 1897 in Westbourne, Manitoba. She was the daughter of John W Lindsay (b 1841) and Lucy Ann Axford (b 1845). Her siblings were: Edwin Wesley (b 1873), Helena Florence (b 1877) and William (b 1877). John and Clara & family lived in Westbourne, Manitoba in 1901. They were in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1906, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1911 and had moved to 427 20th St W, Saskatoon Saskatchewan by 1916. They had two children: Lila Irene (b 1899) and Edith Marion (b 1904). From 1916 to 1929, John was the proprietor of Victoria Theatre in Saskatoon. Nothing further could be found about this family.
The signature assigned to John Lewis Stewart was not a strong match. It was difficult to even determine whether the initial was a J. There were some other J Stewarts living in Saskatoon in 1918 who could also have been the signer. As we are fairly certain that John's sister and brother did sign the quilt, our best guess was that John may also have signed.
In the obituary of Dr. Peter D Stewart, it was mentioned that his brother, Dr R. B. Stewart practiced in Saskatoon for a couple of years before becoming chief surgeon for the Hudson's Bay Company. W.A.D. Stewart, another brother, helped to build the Stewart Block. It was also mentioned that Dr P D Stewart went overseas in 1916 with No 8 Canadian Stationary Hospital and was with various other hospital units in Britain and France before returning to Saskatoon in 1919. In 1939, Peter built the building which then housed the Elite Café operated by the Girgulis Brothers.
