A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

EATON/KEARNS/STORRINGS

John Thomas Kearns was born on 15 May 1859 in Gallway County, Ireland. According to census records, he came to Canada in about 1883. He must have married Margaret (Maggie) Gaughan/Gargan (+ many other surname variations) in about 1881 in Ireland because their first son was born there in 1882. Margaret was born on 9 July 1863 in Carlaw County, Ireland.

John and Margaret had the following children: John Joseph (1882-1948), Thomas J (1887-1964), Margaret Theresa (Maggie) (1892-1961), Ellen Julia (Nellie) (1894-1974), Catherine Agnes (Aggie) (1896-1974), Ann Marie Bridgid (Annie) (1898-1970), Mary "Rita" (1900-1966) and Charles William (Charlie) (1904-1964). According to Margaret's obituary, the Kearns family moved from Arthur, Ontario to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, twenty five years before her death, in about 1911. In 1916 they were living at 528 Main St and in 1921 at 123 20th St W. Over the years, John worked at various occupations, including: plasterer, employee at the post office and caretaker. John died on 25 May 1933 and Maggie on 20 April 1936. Both died in Saskatoon and were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ellen Julia (Nellie) Kearns was born on 22 May 1894 in Arthur, Ontario. She married William Prescott MacFarlane who was born on 2 July 1892 in Petitcodiac, New Brunswick to John MacFarlane (b 1855) and Mary Brooks (b 1865). His siblings were: Fannie M (b 1890), John C (b 1896) and Andrew R (b 1902). William died on 28 August 1939 in Vancouver, British Columbia and Nellie died on 1 April 1974, also in Vancouver.

Catherine Agnes (Aggie) Kearns was born on 28 March 1896 in Arthur, Ontario. She married Clarence Daniel Walsh who was born on 4 July 1895 in Cayuga, Ontario to John Walsh (b 1845) and Mary Baker (b 1853). His siblings were: Francis Leo (b 1890), Fred (b 1891), Ambrose (b 1893) and Loretta (b 1897). Clarence died on 11 January 1948 in Vancouver, British Columbia and Catherine on 20 August 1974 in Richmond, British Columbia.

Mary "Rita" Kearns was born on 16 July 1900 in Arthur, Ontario. She married Cecil Earl Cannon who was born on 23 March 1900 in Frontenac, Ontario to George D Cannon (b 1868) and Mary Tallon (b 1868). Rita died on 3 February 1966 in Vancouver, British Columbia and Cecil on 6 April 1980 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Margaret Theresa (Maggie) who was born on 11 February 1892 in Wellington, Ontario married Alonzo Lester (Alexander) Storrings. He was born on 16 September 1886 in Kingston, Ontario. Although neither of them signed the quilt, it would appear that someone signed for their daughter, Phyllis Margaret Storrings who was born on 25 October 1916 in Saskatoon and died on 10 August 2004 in Prince George, British Columbia.

We could find no other candidate for the name Phyllis Storrings. Her name was signed in the same area of the quilt as the rest of the Kearns family, which supported that she was related to that family.

In 1919, the Storrings family was living at 347 3rd Ave S in Saskatoon, but had moved to Prince George, British Columbia by 1921. Phyllis married Walter William Sherritt who was born on 9 April 1911 in Kispiox Valley, British Columbia and died on 13 October 1983 in Manson Creek, British Columbia.

Annie Kearns was born on 4 June 1898 in Arthur, Ontario. She married Elias Seymour Eaton likely about 1916. Elias was born on 8 May 1893 in Ontario to John C Eaton (1853-1929) and Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) Rumble (1853-1928). His siblings were: William Frank (1885-1958), Hugh Wallace (1888-1913), Margaret (Maggie) (b 1891) and Marjorie (b 1892). In 1916, Elias and Annie were living at 806 Temperance St and in 1921, in #7 Boston Apartments located at 309 Ave F South. Elias died on 12 March 1950 in Vancouver, British Columbia and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver. Annie subsequently married George Morley. Annie died on 18 February 1970 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Elias' father John C Eaton was born on 9 April 1853 in Peel, Ontario to John Eaton (b 1816) and Margaret Boyle (b 1816). His siblings were: Wallace (b 1838), Thomas (b 1840), Mary (b 1843), George (b 1847), Archibald (b 1850), Margaret (b 1850), Sarah (b 1853) and Hugh (b 1858). He was raised in Wellington, Ontario. He married Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) Rumble on 6 October 1884 in Moorefield, Wellington County, Ontario. Lizzie was born on 14 November 1857 in Maryborough, Ontario to William Rumble (b 1832) and Caroline Trask (b 1835). Her siblings were: Permelia Mary Jane (b 1864), Francis William (b 1867), Reuben E (b 1872) and Caroline (b 1876). She was raised in Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

John and Lizzie's children are listed above. The Eaton family lived in Peel Township until at least 1911. By 1916 they had moved to 211 Albert St, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and were at the same address in 1921. Lizzie died on 28 February 1928 and John on 10 October 1929. Both died in Saskatoon and were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the same city.
