Nellie May (Nell) Gable was born on 6 January 1887 in Waterloo, Ontario to Samuel Gable (1855-1902) & Nancy Hutchinson (1855-1837). Nell had five brothers, Wellington Samuel (1864-1969), John Wesley (1855-1964), Harold (1888-1958), Herbert Douglas (1892-1975) & Virden (b 1893) and two sisters both of whom died in infancy, Lillie Maud (1890-1891) & Jessie Pearl (1894-1895). Nell’s father was a farmer and miller but died when she was just fifteen years old. By this time the family had moved west to farm at Marquette, Manitoba.
By 1911, Wellington, the eldest son had taken over the farm, Harold worked on the farm, Herbert had moved to the USA, John was likely married and living independently and Nell was living at home. In 1916, Virden and Nell were school teachers; Virden in Abenethy, Saltcoats, Saskatchewan and Nell in Moose Jaw. In August of that year, Virden enlisted with the CEF, giving his mother as his next of kin and her address as Swan River, Manitoba. Virden served overseas with the 196th Battalion and returned to Canada on SS ‘Scotian‘ arriving in Quebec on 15 May 1919.
John had become an insurance salesman, was married to Anna Barlow and they had two daughters. They were living at 1172 Grafton Ave, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Between 1917-1920, John was a manager for Dominion Life Assurance and the family lived at 409 9th St, Saskatoon.
Nell was a school teacher probably from at least 1907 - there is a reference to her organising an elocution contest at a New Year charity concert for RT of T (probably Round Table of Toronto) see paragraph 3 Manitoba Free Press, Winnipeg 2 Jan 1907. Nell taught in Saskatoon in 1918, probably lodging with her brother, John.
Nell died on 25 June 1926 in Wallace, Manitoba and is buried at Swan River, Manitoba.
