Edwin/Edward John Fidgett was born on 27 September 1885 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England to William Samuel Fidgett (1850-1914) & Mary Ann (Anne) Davis (1857-1934). Edwin had three sisters, Blanche Elizabeth (1881-1974), Beatrice Louisa (1887-1954) & Lillian May (1895-1986) and three brothers, William Thomas (1883-1964), Charles Victor (1890-1981) & Alfred George (1882-1991). Edwin grew up in Cowes where his father was a sail-maker.
Edwin and William Jr came to Canada in 1906 to make their way as carpenters. After a trip back to England, they returned to Canada sailing on RMS ‘Empress of Britain’, leaving Liverpool on 19 April 1912 and arriving in St John, New Brunswick on 27 April. The remainder of the family also immigrated to Canada, sailing on SS ‘Ascania’ which left Southampton on 27 February 1913 and arrived in Portland, Maine on 11 March. They travelled on to Saskatoon.
William was a carpenter in Saskatoon in 1911 but Edwin is not in evidence. Edwin married Clara Gurr (1889-1955) on 17 January 1914 in Saskatoon, less than a month before his father’s death on 13 February. Clara Gurr was born in 1889 in Upnor, Kent England to Thomas Henry Gurr (b 1847) & Emma (b 1847).
It seems likely that Clara met Edwin in Cowes as there is a passenger record for a Clara Gurr sailing on SS ‘Oceania’ from Southampton on 18 January 1911 to New York, arriving on 26 January. This Clara was a domestic servant and gave her last English residence as Cowes, Isle of Wight.
Edwin and Clara had three daughters, Mabel, Daisy Clara & Rose B. No further details are given to protect their privacy.
Edwin worked as a carpenter throughout his life. He worked at University of Saskatchewan for much of this time. Edwin and Clara moved to 704 Main St in the late 1920s. Clara died on 9 November 1955 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. Edwin died on 23 September 1979, aged 93 years. He is also buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
