Alice Higginbottom was born on 8 February 1847 in Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England to Joseph Higginbottom (1904-1867) & Elizabeth Shaw (1821-1879). Alice had four brothers, William Shaw (1844-1899), Stephen (1850-1885), Henry (b 1853) & Joseph (b 1856) and one sister, Ann (b 1858).
Alice was working as a cotton weaver when she married Thomas Fisher (1854-1900) on 14 November 1874 in Chorlton on Medlock. Thomas was born in Millun, Cumberland, England to Thomas Fisher (b 1814) & Elizabeth Greenhow (b 1916). Thomas had five sisters, Marcy (b 1841), Jane (b 1847), Elizabeth (b 1850), Margaret (B 1858) & Sarah (b 1860) and one brother, William (b 1852). Thomas Jr was a bobbin turner by trade at the time of his marriage and this may be how he met Alice. Thomas subsequently worked as a tailor.
Alice and Thomas had three sons, Thomas (b 1876), Joseph (b 1879 & Stephen (b 1880) all born in England. The family immigrated to Canada about 1885/6 and settled in Melbourne, Quebec where Alice’s husband, Thomas was a tailor at Windsor Mills. Alice’s brother, Henry also came to Canada arriving on 9 April 1889 at Halifax, Nova Scotia. When Henry married Fanny Ward in Melbourne on 2 June 1890, Alice was one of the witnesses. Thomas died in Melbourne in September 1900.
Alice came to Saskatoon in 1915 and settled on 5th St, Sutherland. Her sons came too, Stephen also in 1915, Joseph by 1916 and Thomas by 1920. Joseph enlisted in the CEF on 15 December 1915, giving his next of kin as his wife, Bridget. Stephen worked as a conductor and train man for CPR until his death on 23 October 1922.
No further trace of the family has been found.
