THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MABEL M SANDERSON

Mabel M Sanderson was born in 1917 in Saskatchewan to Benjamin J Sanderson (1878-1939) and Amelia Mary Ward (1879-1936). She had at least one sibling, George Benjamin (1913-1944). Her parents were married in Victoria, Ontario on 10 January 1911. They were living in Rosetown, Saskatchewan in 1911 and had moved to 316 Ave E N in Saskatoon by 1916. They were at the same address in 1921.

Her father, Benjamin, who was employed as a barber in Saskatoon, was born on 7 May 1878 in Ontario to Joseph Sanderson (b 1853) and Rachel Parker (b 1861). From 1916 onwards Benjamin Sr is described as proprietor, firstly of Great West Barber Shop and then Victoria Barber Shop, in Saskatoon. In 1928, the family moved to Vancouver, living at 3437 West 1st St and Benjamin Sr was proprietor of Fashion Barber Shop. From 1930 they lived at 1925 West 16th St.

Amelia died on 11 January 1936 in Vancouver. Benjamin Sr subsequently married Annie Louise Lynch (née Braden) on 8 September 1938. Benjamin Sr died on 2 December 1939 in Vancouver and Annie Louise died on 7 September 1959.

Mabel was a stenographer in Vancouver and living with her parents in 1936-1938 and then kept on the family home until 1940.

No further confirmed trace of Mabel has been found.

The names of several children were signed on the quilt and it is speculated that someone wrote Mabel's name on it. We could find no other Mabel Sanderson living in Saskatoon.

Mabel’s brother, George Benjamin was a student at University of British Columbia in about 1934. He travelled to the US in 1937 and joined the RCAF during WWII. He died in a flying accident in England on 26 May 1944. See Aircrew Remembered.
