FREDA GARBUTT née TURNER

Freda Isabelle Turner was born on 18 February 1892 in Toronto, Ontario to Robert James Turner (b 1859) & Rebecca Collins (1864-1915). Freda had one brother, Herbert (1890-1970) and one sister, Francis Rebecca (b 1901). Freda married Gilbert Francis Garbutt (1889-1967) about 1913. Gilbert was born on 20 August 1889 in Peel, Ontario to Edmund Garbutt (1844-1928 & Eliza Hoggan (1855-1915). Gilbert had one sister, Eliza Grace (1874-1966) and three brothers, George E (b 1874), William Hector (1877-1942) & Edgar Ernest (1881-1938).

Freda & Gilbert moved to Saskatoon in 1916 and Gilbert found various jobs; as a machinist, as a traveller for Fairbanks-Morse (the engineering supplies company) and as a brakeman for CNR. They lived at a couple of addresses; 726 7th Ave N and then an apartment in Thompson Chambers, 2nd Ave N. During this period their two children were born; Harold Edmund (1916-1990) & Lela Grace (1921-2001).

In 1923, the family headed for California, travelling via Vancouver and Seattle. In 1926, Gilbert took US citizenship and until at least 1935 they were living at 3697 Lugo Ave, Lynwwood, Los Angeles. Gilbert now worked as a carpenter on house building. Gilbert and Freda remained in the US. Freda died on 12 October 1958 in Palm Springs, Riverside, California and Gilbert on 5 July 1967 in Oakland, Alameda, California.
