Sarah Milchard was born on 22 February 1861 in Stepney, London, England to Charles Milchard (1827-1865) & Sarah Hales (1831-1918). Sarah had three brothers, George (1853-867), Alexander Sellers (b 1853) and one sister, Elizabeth (1856-1936). Sarah’s father was a Thames waterman. Sarah worked as a tailoress in 1881 whilst living with her family at 148 West Ferry Rd, Poplar, London. On 6 August 1884 she married James Esson (1859-1934) in Poplar, London. James was born on 13 Sep 1859 in Leochel-Cushnie, Aberdeen, Scotland. James worked as a servant for the Dock Company.
Sarah & James had five sons, Thomas John (1884-1885), Archibald James (b 1887), James Joseph (1890-1984), Edwin George (1891-1952) & Benjamin Charles (1894-1979) and seven daughters, Grace Lillian (1885-1917), Ethel Mary (1888-1900), Annie Elizabeth (b 1892), Annie Elizabeth (b 1892), Daisy (b 1896), Winifred (b 1898), Ethel Doris (b 1901) & Hilda (1803-1976).
In 1905, Archibald James sailed from Liverpool to St John, New Brunswick arriving on 2 January 1906. He must have sent back encouraging reports because James & Sarah with Edwin, Annie, Benjamin, Daisy, Winifred, Ethel D, & Hilda sailed from Liverpool on SS ‘Canada’ arriving in Montreal on 29 June 1907. They travelled on to Saskatoon and by 1908 were all living at Ave B North. The same year James Joseph joined them having arrived on SS ‘Lake Manitoba’ in Quebec on 22 May 1910.
James Joseph married Annie in about 1920, based on a US census record for 1930.
Archibald James had married Violet Emily Boxall (1889-1924) in March 1918 in Pertersfield, Hampshire, England. Violet was the widow of Thomas Porter (1877-1916) who had died on active service in Flanders. Violet came to Canada to join Archibald in 1920 on SS ’Grampion’ arriving in St John, New Brunswick on 5 April.
Sarah died on 4 January 1928 in Saskatoon and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. James Sr died on 14 June 1934 and is buried alongside Sarah.
