CLAIRE VIVIAN SAYWELL
Claire Vivian Saywell was born on 9 June 1884 in Ontario to Charles Saywell (1848-1932) and Mary Ann Coulter (b 1846). Her siblings were: Sherwood Harvey (1872-1898), Margaretta Anne (Etta) (b 1873), Anne Cary (Mabel) (b 1876), Blanche M (b 1880), Etoile B (Etoy) (1882-1942) and Bertha Eleanor (b 1892).
In early records the surname was often spelled Sewell, but by the time Claire was born, the name Saywell was being used. Claire was raised in Yarmouth Township, Elgin, Ontario. By 1911 she was living in Regina, Saskatchewan. She appeared in a list of early teachers for Aylesbury School District in "Craik, Friendliest Place by a Dam Site", a local history book compiled by a group of people in the community of Craik in 1985. No date was given, but she likely taught there sometime between 1912 and 1914 as she was in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan by 1915.
Claire joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1915 and was a teacher in the Saskatoon public school system living at 647 University Drive in 1916. At that time she was boarding with Mrs Mary Bailey and family. She was listed as a teacher living at 720 McPherson St in the 1918 Saskatoon Henderson Directory. She died in Saskatoon on 10 March 1919 and was buried in an unknown location. Probate records exist where her father, Charles, claimed beneficiary status for her estate.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Saywell Tree.
If this signature is in Claire’s own hand it will help us in dating the period when the quilt was being made.
