May Lillian (Lillie) Hurssell was born on 7 April 1871 in Cayuga, Haldimand, Ontario to Joseph Hurssell (b 1822) and Mary Armstrong (b 1823). May had six sisters, Harriett (b 1845), Margaret V (b 1846), Elizabeth (1854-1897), Ellen (b 1857), Emma “Josephine” (1860-1938) & Mary (b 1868) and three brothers, Joseph Leopold (1849-1926), Jonathan (b 1851) and Alfred Ernest (1862-1954). Her family came west and had settled on Dagmar Rd, Winnipeg, Manitoba by 1880 when Joseph is described in the city directory as ‘gentleman’.
Lillie married William John Gordon on 3 April 1895 in Winnipeg. William was born on 16 September 1864 in Carleton, Ontario to John Gordon (b 1837) & Margaret Jane Walker (b 1837). William had four brothers, Robert W (b 1862), David Lowry (b 1868), Samuel Benjamin (b 1870) & Calvin Andrew (b 1874) and two sisters, Barbara A (b 1867) & Rebecca Agnes (b 1868). The following year William was running a carriage making business, in 1901 he was a police constable and by the time he and Lillie moved to Saskatoon in 1909, William had become a building contractor. This was William’s trade fro the rest of his working career. William and Lillie had one daughter, Geraldine Phyllis (1906-1993). Geraldine married Frederick George Cross (1906-1980).
From 1909 to 1942, the family lived at 503 5th Ave N in Saskatoon. Lillie’s brother, Alfred Ernest lived with them for much of this time; he was an engraver. Lillie died on 9 November 1943. William then moved to Vancouver where he died on 17 February 1949.
