WILLIAMINA ISABELLA ROBERTS GOVE

Williamina Isabella Roberts Gove was born on 16 May 1909 in Perth, Scotland to William Roberts Gove (1885-1963) & Isabella Muirhead Mitchell (1875-1932). Williamina had one sister, Evelyn (1912-1918). The family sailed from Glasgow on 27 July aboard SS ‘Letitia’, arriving in Quebec on 4 August. They were heading for Saskatchewan.

On his arrival in Saskatoon, in 1917, William first found work as a janitor at Dunrobin Apartments, 804 McPherson Avenue where the family lived in the basement. Subsequently William worked as a gardener which had been his trade in Scotland. Two of William’s sisters, Annie & Marjorie came to Canada in 1916 and after a brief stay at the YWCA they both roomed with William and his family in suite 11 Dunrobin Apartments. In 1920, William moved with his immediate family to 1009 McDougall Avenue.

By 1928, William, Isabella & Williamina were living at 780 Phoenix Ave, Victoria, British Columbia where William was working as a gardener for John Ernest Goldring an executive of the Robert Simpson departmental store. Isabella died 11 July 1932 in Victoria.

Williamina married Leonard James Simmons on 22 May 1937 in Sidney, British Columbia. Leonard was born on 1 October 1894 in Costessey, Norfolk, England to James Simmons (1864-1957) & Martha Catherine Dunham (1873-1918). Leonard subsequently became a gardener & Williamina a housekeeper for J E Goldring living with him at 320 Bessborough Ave, Victoria, British Columbia.

William died on 16 June 1963 in Victoria. Leonard died on 20 June 1971 in Saanich and Williamina on 4 March 1977 in Victoria.
