MARION GRANT

Marion Grant was born on 30 August 1892 in London, Middlesex,Ontario to Archibald Grant (1850-1910) & Margaret (Maggie) McCrae (1860-1965). Marion had one brother, Archibald Leslie (1887-1950) and one sister, Margaret Ethel (1888-1975). Archibald Sr was a farmer and sometime store-keeper and post-master.

Archibald Jr, Margaret Ethel & Marion came to Saskatoon in 1912; Archibald as a cement contractor, Margaret Ethel worked as a stenographer for J H Ashdown Hardware and Marion worked as a stenographer for Massey-Harris. They initially lived at 312 Ave E North but moved to 922 9th Ave N in 1915. Maggie joined them and kept house.

Archibald rapidly established himself in partnership with Daniel Richardson forming Grant & Richardson, Real Estate & Insurance Agents. Archibald is variously described as contractor and farmer until he moved away from Saskatoon in the 1920s. He married Jean Gordon Ross (1887-1965) and they had two children. He died on 15 June 1950 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Margaret Ethel subsequently trained as a nurse and worked at the City Hospital in Saskatoon for thirty years until she retired in 1950. She moved to Victoria, British Columbia and married Charles William Downer (1884-1960) an Anglican priest. She died on 20 February 1975 in Victoria.

Marion joined the Quaker Oats Company as a stenographer in 1915 and remained with the company until she retired in 1952 having held the post of head stenographer for a number of years. She had worked for the Quaker Oats Company for 37 years. She continued to live at 922 9th Ave N until her mother’s death in 1965 when she moved probably to live with her sister in Victoria. She died on 20 May 1979 in Surrey, British Columbia.
