E PITT
Joseph "Evans" Pitt was born on 16 April 1881 in Quebec to Alexander Pitt (b 1844) and Margaret J Moore (b 1854). His siblings were: Robert "Ernest" (b 1875), George (b 1883), Gordon (1886-1934), Alexander (1887-1934), Agnes (b 1890) and Harold (b 1893). Joseph lived in Mansfield and Pontefract, Pontiac, Quebec until at least 1901. According to his obituary, he had lived in Sutherland, Saskatchewan for more than 30 years at the time of his death on 22 June 1940 in Sutherland. This would mean that he moved to Sutherland in about 1910.
Joseph married Mary who was born in Scotland in 1889. They had two daughters, Annie Margaret Josephine (1914-1983) and Evelyn Mary (1917-1994). In 1916, the Pitt family was living on Evans St, Sutherland (which is now a subdivision of Saskatoon) and in 1921, they were still living in Sutherland. Joseph was a switchman for the CPR. In 1935, they were living on 11th St, Sutherland. Joseph was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon. Mary was not buried there. She was still alive when Joseph died in 1940.
In 1901, Joseph was enumerated under the name Evans and his name was listed as J Evans in some Saskatoon Henderson Directory listings. This suggests that he, at least some of the time, was called Evans. Perhaps he was the person who signed the quilt E Pitt.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Pitt 2 Tree.
There are two candidates for the E Pitt signature. The first one, Edward Harold Pitt, was the brother of William Henry (Harry) Pitt. Their history is described here. The alternative candidate is described below.
Without sample signatures, we have no way of deciding between these candidates.
