Oswald Richardson was born on 8 February 1882 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to George Edmund Richardson (1846-1918) and Rachel McIntosh (b 1845). His siblings were: Neil Howard (1874-1927), Abner Asa (1877-1917), Vibert (1879-1950), Daniel (b 1879), Harvey (1886-1946) and Edith (b 1891). Children born to his father's first wife, Rachel Davidson (1845-1872) were: Charlotte Eliza (Lottie) (1866-1939), Margaret Ann (Maggie) (1868-1901) and Lorinda (Laura) (b 1869).

Oswald was raised in Sidney. He married Mildred Louise Foot there on 30 June 1908. Mildred was born on 5 February 1886 in Coldbrook, Kings, Nova Scotia to Richard Thompson Foote (1856-1937) and Mary "Frances" Redden (1866-1938). Her siblings were: Alice Maude (1884-1985), James Clifford (1887-1976), Robin Liewellyn (Otto) (1889-1964), Clarence (1892-1893), Rufus (1894-1955), Frances Gertrude (1898-1975) and Earl Haddon (1907-1909). She was raised in Hants County, Nova Scotia. After their marriage, Oswald and Mildred lived in Sidney until at least 1911. They had at least four children, Inez Margaret (b 1909), Harvey (b 1910) and two more boys born at later dates.

The family arrived in Saskatoon in 1912 and lived at various addresses: 316 Ave D South, 202 28th St W, 528 Ave K, 222 Ave D North, 314 29th St W, 615 4th Ave N & suite 7 Parkview, 444 5th Ave N. In 1916 Oswald was employed as a salesman and from at least 1918 to 1921, as a shipper for A MacDonald Cooper Co. He continued to work for MacDonalds in various capacities until his death on 7 December 1951. Oswald was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon. Mildred died on 28 May 1982, possibly in Edmonton, Manitoba.
