ETHEL PLUMBER née FISHER

Ethel Fisher was born in the 1st quarter of 1873 in Greenwich, Kent, England to William Benjamin Fisher (1828-1899) and Rachael Starkey (1830-1913). Her siblings were: Alfred William (b 1857), William Benjamin (b 1859), Theodore (1863-1949), Harriet Jane (b 1864), Walter (1865-1935), Clement (1867-1871), Ada Deborah (1870-1956), Elizabeth (b 1872), May (b 1874) and Herbert H (b 1878). The Fisher family was living in Greenwich, London in 1881.

Ethel married William Edwin Plummer in the 3rd quarter of 1899 in Epsom, Surrey, England. William was born on 31 March 1869 in Hastings, Sussex, England to William Plummer (1836-1899) and Phoebe Gertrude Stroud (1839-1897). His siblings were: Amy Gertrude (1866-1936), Jessie Amelia (b 1867), Ettie Agatha (b 1871), Beatrice Annie (b 1872), Edgar Stroud (1873-1940), Frederick George (1875-1953), Sydney Herbert (1877-1916), Elsie Grace (1881-1975) and Millicent Phoebe (b 1883). In 1881 William was living with his parents and siblings in Hastings. William (a medical practitioner), Ethel and their eldest child, Arthur (b 1901) were living in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, England in 1901. Their second son, Theodore Stroud Plummer was born in Wen Chow, China on 17 September 1907.

William left Liverpool, England on 9 October 1913 aboard SS ‘Teutonic' and landed in Quebec City, Quebec on 11 Oct 1913. He was travelling alone and gave his final destination as Fredericton, New Brunswick. According to census records, his wife and children immigrated to Canada in 1914. Saskatoon City Henderson Directories for 1918 and 1919 listed William Edwin Plummer, a physician, at 704 McPherson in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. By 1921 the family had moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. It was interesting to note that at least one of Ethel's sisters, Ada Neatby, raised her family in Saskatoon and eventually died there. Her brother, William, settled in British Columbia with his family. A 1924 Shanghai, China travel document for Ethel identified Missionary work as the purpose of her trip. Ada's obituary identified Christian Missions as her principal interest, so one gets the impression that at least some of the Fishers were very devout Christians. William died on 6 December 1946 in West Vancouver and Ethel on 30 May 1958 in Spokane, Washington although her address was given as Vancouver.
