Robert Sidney Gebbie was born on 12 August 1885 in Howick, Chateauguay, Quebec to Hugh Gebbie (1831-1918) and Janet (Jessie) Laverock (1844-1924). His siblings were: Isabella (1864-1922), Marion (1866-1946), Thomas (b 1868), Sarah Laverock (1869-1921), William Laverock (1872-1941), Alfred Hugh (1875-1938), John James (1877-1940), Jessie Elizabeth (1879-1938) and George Laverock (b 1882). Robert was raised in Chateauguay.
Robert married Annie "Alma" Pilgrim on 16 December 1908 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Alma was born on 29 January 1886 in Emerson, Manitoba to Thomas M Pilgrim (b 1855) and Alma Emma Cole (1858-1891). She had two brothers, Edmund Francis (Edward) (b 1888) and Frederick (1890-1890). In 1891 the Pilgrim family was living in Provencher, Manitoba.
Robert and Alma had one son, Gibson Hugh (1909-1986). In 1911 Robert, Alma and Gibson were living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Gibson was living with his Aunt Sarah & Uncle Alva Young in 1916 (Sovereign, Saskatchewan) and 1921 (Puyallup, Pierce, Washington). Sarah was his father's sister. There was a female Elmer Gibbie who died on 26 November 1911 in Winnipeg. Elmer and Alma sound similar and it is unlikely that a woman was really named Elmer. Possibly this was the death record for Alma Gebbie.
Robert married Burdetta Mabel Geddes on 24 July 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. Mabel was born in 1885 in Ontario and died in 1918 in Michigan. Her parents were David J Geddes (b 1857) and Mary Ann McCracken (b 1858). Her siblings were: Sarah L (b 1882), Hattie F (b 1884), Eva Ethel (b 1887) and John M (b 1890). Some family trees indicated that Robert died in Calgary, Alberta on 27 March 1919. This is almost undoubtedly the same person as Robert Sidney Gibbie buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with a death date of 27 March 1919.
We cannot be sure that Robert signed the quilt as the name on the quilt is R Geebie. The name Geebie seems to be non existent in records anywhere and so we are speculating that someone else wrote the name on the quilt and spelled it wrong. If the name was given verbally, b and e sound a bit similar and they may have misunderstood what they were being told. Robert had two brothers John J and Alfred H living in Saskatoon in 1918 when the quilt was being made. After the recent death of his wife, he may have been living with one of his brothers for a while. All of this is pure speculation, but we could find no other possible candidate for this signature.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Gebbie Tree.
