DAVID MARK and DOREEN GEARY

David Mark Geary was born in December 1909 and Doreen Geary was born on 1 November 1911 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Michael Carver Geary (1878-1964) & Elizabeth Moane (1886-1968). Michael was born in Ireland and arrived in Canada via New York having sailed on SS ‘Teutonic’ from Queens-town, Ireland, arriving in New York on 24 May 1906. Elizabeth was also born in Ireland and arrived in Canada via the US in about 1905.

In 1910, Michael was a city sanitary inspector in Saskatoon and the family lived at 221 11th St. They remained at 11th St for several years, possibly moving house or it may be that the house numbering was not yet firmly established. By 1923, the family had moved to 706 King St, the family residence for the rest of Michael & Elizabeth’s life.

David first found employment in 1925, aged 16 years as a clerk for Sovereign Life Assurance Co where his father was a manager. He later joined Quaker Oats Co also as a clerk. David married Viola M Stewart in about 1940. Viola M Stewart (1916-1999) was the daughter of Joseph Albert Stewart (1884-1932) & Viola Beatrice Thornton (1890-1915). David and Viola had three children, Barbara, David S & Michael.

Doreen was 17 years old when she started as a stenographer with O'Regan & Rees, barristers of 304 Grain Building, 129 2nd Ave N in 1928. The following year she too worked for Sovereign Life Assurance Co. After a further spell with another firm of barristers, Estey Moxon Schmitt & McDonald of 202 Grain Building, Doreen moved to Ottawa where she worked in the Civil Service and then went on to a long career in the International Civil Service at United Nations Headquarters in New York. From 1950-1962, she was Personal Assistant to Andrew Cordier, Executive Assistant to the first two Secretaries-General of the UN, Trygve Lie and Dag Hammarskjold. Doreen retired from the UN in 1976. You can see a photograph of Doreen with Andrew Cordier and read her Profile of him here.

Michael died on 24 December 1964 and Elizabeth died on 28 February 1968 both in Saskatoon.

David died on 10 February 1998 in Saskatoon.

Doreen died on 4 September 2003 in Victoria, British Columbia.

They are all buried in the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
