Laban Geldart was born in April 1879 in Failsworth, Manchester, England to Henry Geldart (1849-1918) &Hannah (Mary) Wild (1848-1899). Laban had three brothers, Johnson (1877-1948), Tom (1884-1965) & Harry (1894-1967) and three sisters, Lydia Ann (1882-1969), Mary (1880-1918) & Annie (1890-1937). Laban followed in his father’s footsteps as a bricklayer. He married Jane (Jennie) Hurst on 21 October 1905 in Failsworth. Jennie was born on 21 May 1882 in Ormskirk, Fleetwood, Lancashire to Edwin Hurst (1853-1926) & Elizabeth Rider (1849-1903). Jennie had three sisters, Susy (b 1872), Maggie (1881-1945) & Elizabeth (b 1886).
Laban and Jennie had one daughter, Mary born on 8 June 1907 in Failsworth.
Laban came to Canada in 1910, sailing on SS ‘Victorian’ departing Liverpool on 12 April and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 22 April. He had come on his own and only stayed a few months so he may nor have come west at this time. He returned to England in time for Christmas, sailing on SS ‘Empress of Britain’ from St John, New Brunswick to arrive in Liverpool on 23 December 1910. Laban returned to Canada sailing on SS ‘Virginian’ from Liverpool and arriving in Montreal on 6 May 1911. Jennie and Mary followed on SS ‘Empress of Ireland’, arriving in Quebec on 14 September 1911. The family arrived in Saskatoon in 1912 and lived at 610 Lansdowne Ave for many years where Laban plied his trade as bricklayer during Saskatoon’s boom years.
The whole family took a trip back to England in 1922 when Mary was 14 years old. Mary worked as a stenographer on Saskatoon for Eatons departmental store. She married Edwin Louis Fribance (1909-1991) probably in the 1930s and they moved to British Columbia.
Laban & Jennie moved to British Columbia in about 1943 and lived at 3665 48th Ave E, Vancouver. Laban continued to work as a bricklayer until at least 1949 when he was 66 years old. He died on 2 December 1956 and Jennie died on 26 December 1960 both in New Westminster, British Columbia.
