WILLARD LLOYD NOYES and HESTER NORA NOYES née RHEA
Wesley Worthington (Worthy) Noyes was born on 18 July 1877 in Crowell, Nebraska to Clark Briggs Noyes (1847-1941) and Margaret Prudence Thomas (1850-1932). His siblings were: Robert Edgar (1878-1916), Julia Belle (b 1880) and Willard Lloyd (1883-1974). In 1880 the Noyes family lived in Cuming, Dodge, Nebraska and in 1900 in Platte, Dodge, Nebraska. According to his obituary, Worthy lived in Freemont, Nebraska for a number of years before moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1909.
In 1909, Willard arrived in Saskatoon where he was secretary of the Goose Lake Grain & Lumber Company. By 1912 Wesley had become the secretary and Willard had moved up to president. They continued to be involved with that company until about 1924. In 1911 Worthy and Willard boarded with the Rees family at 418 22nd Street.
Worthy married Clara Handy circa 1916. She was born on 4 September 1885 in Troy, Kent, Ontario to Orin Phineas Handy (1842-1910) and Christian Ann (Christie) Smith (1862-1937). Her siblings were: Morse (1884-1943), Orin (1888-1976), Jane (1889-1909), Gertha (b 1892) and Rufus (1896-1942). The Handy family lived in Harwich, Kent, Ontario until at least 1901. By 1911 they were living in Rodney, Elgin, Ontario. Christie and the children came to Saskatoon in 1913 and were living at 608 2nd Ave N. Clara, Gertha, Morse & Rufus were all clerks for J F Cairns, the departmental store. Her Clara’s obituary indicated that she remained in Saskatoon for the rest of her life.
By the time of the 1916 census, she and Worthy were married and living at 417 3rd Ave N which was also their residence in 1921. They had two sons: Clark O (1916-1963) and Floyd Worthington (1918-1972). Worthy died on 23 August 1960 and Clara on 24 May 1976, both in Saskatoon. Worthy’s obituary noted that he was pioneer resident of Saskatoon and an original member of the 3rd Avenue Methodist Church.
Worthy's obituary is available on Google Archived Newspapers .
Clara's mother, Christie Smith, was born on 18 November 1862 in Saltfleet, Ontario to John Smith and Ann. She married Orin Handy on 26 November 1883 in St Thomas, Elgin Ontario. In 1918 she was listed at 417 3rd Ave N, the same address as Worthy and Clara. She was enumerated with them at that same address in 1921. Christie died on 10 December 1937, likely in Hafford, Saskatchewan. Her obituary said that she was of Hafford, but did not give any other details.
Worthy's brother, Willard Lloyd, was born on 18 December 1883 in Crowell, Nebraska. He married Hester Nora Rhea on 15 October 1913 in Alton, Madison, Illinois. Hester was born on 1 April 1882 in Abingdon, Washington, Virginia to James Robert Rhea (1832-1889) and Ruth Ann Wright (1846-1902). Her siblings were: Mary Catherine (Mollie) (1868-1954), Joseph Calhoun (1870-1929), Margaret Elizabeth (Betty) (1871-1954), James "Phillip" (1873-1957) and Bertha Ann (1886-1953). Census records indicated that Hester immigrated to Canada in 1913 which would coincide with the year that she got married.
From at least 1916 to 1921, Willard and Hester lived at 662 Saskatchewan Crescent. They had no children listed in any of the census records. At the time of Worthy's death in 1960, Willard was living in St Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida. Hester died on 20 March 1950 in Saskatoon and Willard on 20 July 1974 in Pinellas. Willard and Worthy first appeared on the Roll for 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1911 and 1912, respectively. Christie Handy joined in 1914, Clara in 1915 and Hester in 1916. All who signed the quilt, with the exception of Christie Handy and Willard, had their funeral from that church and all but Willard was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
