Duncan Arthur Walpole Hanes was born on 13 September 1882 in Chaffey, Lincoln, Ontario to Frederick Alonzo Hanes (1847-1937) and Sarah Rachel Martha Quaife (1857-1889), Duncan had three siblings, Valentina A (Violet) (b 1885), James C (1887-1969) and Martha E (b 1889). Duncan grew up on the family farm in Huntsville, Muskoka and Parry Sound, Ontario.
In 1906 Duncan was lodging with Adeline McConkey and her son Robert in Calgary, Alberta.
Duncan married Eva Mary Kidd on 28 October 1908 in Nelson, British Columbia. Their marriage certificate states that they were both Methodists and he was an accountant. One of the witnesses was his sister-in-law Florence M Kidd. Eva was born in March 1884 probably in Essa, Simcoe, Ontario to Daniel Kidd (1852-1937) and Rachel Eva Freeman (1849-1935). Eva had five siblings, James Freeman (1875-1934), Frank B (b 1877), William Jefferson (1880-1946), Christopher (b 1882) and Etna Earle (b 1886).
Duncan and Eva lived in Kootenay, British Columbia after their marriage. They had two children, Frederick “Earle” (1909-1995) and Yvonne (b 1912), both born in British Columbia. Duncan was credit manager for J H Ashdown Hardware in Saskatoon from 1912-1915. He made a trip to England in 1915, returning on SS 'Philadelphia' and travelling via New York, USA.
From 1916 for several years Duncan divided his time between RM Tisdale, near Prince Albert and 826 6th Ave, Saskatoon. Eva and the children seem to have remained in Saskatoon whilst the children were students. Duncan and Eva were on the roll of the 3rd Ave Methodist Church from 1912 until Duncan died in 1953. In 1921 they had moved to the family home at 704 McPherson Ave, Saskatoon.
Both Duncan and Earle served with the military during WWII, whilst Yvonne was a nurse at the Saskatoon City Hospital. Earle married Sybil G? (1919-2010) and Yvonne married Len Mathewson.
Duncan died on 7 March 1953 in The Pas, Manitoba. Eva died on 19 April 1971. They are buried in adjacent plots in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon.
Duncan’s obituary includes the following outline of his life:
The late Mr. Hanes was born In Ontario and came west to Alberta in 1903, later going on to British Columbia. He came to make his home in Saskatoon In 1911. Mr. Hanes was well known in the northern areas of the western provinces having taken an active role in the pioneering mining developments of northern Manitoba and northeast Saskatchewan. In more recent years he had also taken an interest In the development of the lumbering Industry in the northern areas. Mr. Hanes was a life member of Tisdale Lodge No. 76, A F and A M. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and a life member of Regina Chapter Rose Croix.
