SUSAN “MAE” (SUSIE) PETERKIN née MUTCH and MARY AMELIA MUTCH
Susan "Mae" (Susie) Mutch was born on 25 May 1881 in Mount Mellick, Prince Edward Island to Charles Mutch (1846-1915) and Mary Jane Jenkins (1855-1944). She was baptized on 4 June 1887. Some family trees indicated that she was born in Cherry Valley, but this was not the place listed on the baptismal record. Her siblings were: Lyla/Lila Blanche (1879-1959), Harry Jenkins (1882-1960), Robert Milton (1885-1953), Annie Isabel (1886-1970), Mary Amelia (1889-1973) and William John (1891-1968). She was raised in Queens, Prince Edward Island until at least 1911. At that time, both she and her sister, Mary, were listed as school teachers and were living at home with their parents and siblings.
Susie first appeared in Saskatoon Henderson Directories as S Mae Mutch in 1912 and was listed at various locations in the down town area of Saskatoon until 1915. She was a stenographer for J Enger and later, for Saskatoon Fire Insurance Company Ltd. She was likely married to Lloyd Dawson Peterkin in 1915 or 1916. He was born on 26 April 1889 in Arthur, Ontario to William Peterkin (1843-1922) and Jemima Ballantine (1850-1889). His siblings were: Emma S (b 1872), Maud M (b 1874), William Walter (b 1875), George Alexander (1878-1963), Adam Ballantine (1880-1969) and Bertha Lesley W (b 1882). He was raised in Arthur. In 1911 he was lodging with the Weinert family in Clifford, Ontario and working as a banker. He was first listed in Saskatoon Henderson Directories in 1912 and was employed in various banks in the city until 1915. It was interesting to note that in 1913 he and his future wife, Susie Mae, were both lodging at 425 5th Ave N. Perhaps that was where they met. In 1916 Lloyd and Mae were enumerated at 608 24th St and Mae's sister, Mary, was listed as a lodger who was working as a stenographer for an insurance office. In 1918 they were living at 413 10th St and Lloyd was a clerk at the Quaker Oats Co. A daughter Jean Audrey (1917-2014) was listed with them at 335 5th Ave N in 1921. Another daughter was born after 1921.
In early records, Susie seemed to be the name most often used, but in Jean's obituary, her mother was referred to as Mae, so it seemed that became the name of preference, at least in later years. Mae died on 27 February 1956 in Oak Bay, British Columbia. Sometime after this, Lloyd married his deceased wife's sister, Mary, who was born on 20 June 1889 in Mount Mellick, Prince Edward Island. She was baptized on 3 July 1890. She first appeared in Saskatoon Henderson Directories in 1914. At that time she was living at 518 10th St and working as a stenographer for Atcheson, Durie and Wakeling. In 1915 she was at 535 Broadway and was employed as a clerk for Singer Sewing Machine and in 1918 she was at 413 10th St working as a stenographer for the National Trust Company. Lloyd died on 10 Apr 1971 in Victoria British Columbia and Mary on 16 December 1973, also in Victoria. Mary and Mae were buried in Royal Oak Burial Park, Saanich, Victoria. Lloyd may be buried there as well, but his death record only indicated that he had been cremated.
Mary and Susan Mae were the only possibilities that we could locate for the Molly Mutch and S W Peterkin signatures on the quilt. As Molly is a common nick name for Mary we speculated that Mary may have signed her name Molly. However, we could find no documentation to suggest that she ever used the nick name Molly. We cannot explain the middle initial W for the S W Peterkin signature. It is possible that Mae wrote her name on a piece of paper and asked someone else to write it on the quilt for her. Perhaps they mistook the M for a W.
