JOHN FRASER MARR

John Fraser Marr was born on 6 February 1858 in Ballumbie, Tealing, Forfarshire to Peter Marr (b 1827) & Flora (b 1824). After his early years in Scotland he came to south London, England as a manual labourer. In 1881 he was a gas works stoker lodging at 2 Crown Terrace, Bell Green, Lewisham.

In the second quarter of 1890 he married a Helen Davidson. It is thought that this is Helen Davidson who was born on 18 January 1854 in Faillea Deviot/Davoit, Invernessshire, Scotland to Francis & Charlotte Davidson.

The family was living at 24 Freemasons Road, Croydon, Surrey, England in 1891. John was a carpenter and their daughter Florence (Flora) was born on 10 January 1891 in Croydon.

On 6 January 1893 in Croydon, twin girls were born. Helen Alexina died aged five in 1898. The death was registered in Reigate, Surrey. Christina Charlotte lived into her 94th year. John emigrated to Canada around 1911 and Helen and the two girls followed in 1912; departing from Liverpool about 7 October on SS ‘Tunisian’ and arriving in Montreal on 13 October.

The family travelled west to Saskatoon and were at 804 McPherson Ave in 1916 and by 1920 had moved to 728 Main St where they remained until John’s death. Flora worked as nurse at the Municipal Hospital and subsequently as a clerk/saleslady at Christie Grant. Christina worked as a seamstress throughout her life. John worked as a carpenter for J H Ashdown Hardware until his retirement in 1935 aged 77 years. Helen died on 5 January that year and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. John died on 16 July 1938 and is also buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Neither daughter married. They both moved to British Columbia, Flora in 1945. Flora was living at 1407 Forth St, Victoria when she died on 10 May 1969. Christina was living at 4411 Benkinsop Rd, Victoria when she died on 7 October 1987, aged 94 years.
