JAMES MASON HEMMINGWAY

James Mason Hemmingway was born on 17 July 1864 in Elizabethtown, Leeds, Ontario to John Hemmingway (1823-1883) and Margaret Dalton (1828-1914). His siblings were: Lucinda (1853-1873), Mary Mulveno (1855-1896), William Dalton (1858-1925), Samuel (b 1860), George (b 1862), Adelia Jane (b 1867), John Edwin (b 1868) and Alice Beatrice Margaret (1870-1881). From at least 1871 to 1891, James, his parents and various siblings lived in Tay, Simcoe, Ontario.

James married Laura Anne Hutchinson on 5 July 1893 in Tay. She was born on 31 March 1873 in Sunnidale, Ontario to James Hutchinson (1844-1913) and Sarah "Eliza" Heard (1849-1926). Her siblings were: William (b 1870), John Clement (b 1875), Eliza (b 1883) and Ellen Eugenia (b 1889). James, Laura and their children lived in Tay until at least 1911. Their first fifteen children were born in Ontario: Eveline Laura N (b 1895), Arthur J (1897-1972), Phoebe Adelia (b 1898), George (b 1899), Alford Edwin (1900-1900), Harvey Ernest (1901-1964), Edith Luella (b 1902), Gertrude Eugena (Gertie) (b 1903), John Alvin (b 1904), Herbert William (1906-1988), Franklin Edward (b 1907), Gladys (b 1908), Irma Eliza (b 1909), Joseph Leslie (b 1910) and a baby boy (1912-1912).

They had three more children born in Saskatchewan: Dick (b 1914), Mary (b 1914) and Lester (b 1916). A daughter, Beatrice, who married a Kusmire was mentioned in the Hanley book, but she could not be placed in census records. By 1916, the Hemmingway family had moved to 32-30-1-3 in McCraney RM which is quite close to Hanley, Saskatchewan. James obtained homestead grants for both the NW and SW quarters of that section of land. Laura died on 5 November 1939 and James on 17 January 1942. Both were buried in Hanley Cemetery, Hanley.

There was a short family history published in Ripples and Reflections: Hanley p 328

As Hanley is only 63 km from Saskatoon and Saskatoon is the nearest large city, it is speculated that James had reason to come to Saskatoon from time to time and that he signed the quilt on one of those occasions. No other J Hemmingway candidate could be found for this signature.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave Hemmingway Tree.
