THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MARY GERTRUDE McMUNN

Mary Gertrude McMunn was born on 19 January 1899 in Bathurst, Ontario to John Deacon McMunn (1866-1943) and Margaret E Stiller (b 1872). Her siblings were: Lillian (b 1892), Pemberton Deacon (1894-1978), Mabel Alberta (b 1896), John "Ross" (b 1897), Ralph (1905-1977) and Edith Margaret (b 1907).

The McMunn family was living in Bathurst in 1901, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1911 and on land in 8-13-E Springfield, Manitoba in 1916. Mary married Walter Henry Roche on 14 June 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Walter was born on 16 November 1885 in Watford, Ontario to Richard Lewis Roche (b 1856) and Johannah (Annie, Hannah) O'Leary (b 1854). His siblings were: Margaret A (b 1878), Mary Agnes (b 1879), Millie (b 1881), Francis (Frank) (b 1884), William L (b 1890), Roy James (b 1893) and Hannah Madeline (b 1898). In 1921 Mary and Walter were living in Winnipeg.

Several Methodist people from Manitoba signed the quilt. This has led to speculation that there may have been a meeting of the Methodist Church in Saskatoon in 1918. Mary's brother, Pemberton, was in Perdue, Saskatchewan in 1916 and that town is quite close to Saskatoon, so perhaps Mary had reason to come to Saskatoon in 1918. We could find no other candidate for the Mary McMunn signature. It is interesting to note that if the Mary in the tree was the signer, she signed before the 14th of June 1918 as that was the day she was married and the signature was in her maiden name.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave McMunn Tree.
