EDITH ELLEN WILSON McNAB née TODD

Edith Ellen Wilson Todd was born on 17 June 1871 in Walkerton, Bruce, Ontario to Andrew James Todd (1839-1932) and Jane Porteous 1840-1906). Her siblings were: Ida (b 1865), Anna (b 1867), Florence (b 1869), Jessie (b 1874), Robert Ernest (b 1880) and Francis (b 1887). The Todd family was in McDougall, Cowper and Foley Township, Muskoka, Ontario in 1881 and Woodworth, Manitoba in 1891.

Edith married Archibald Peter (Archie) McNab on 20 April 1892 in Winchester RM, Manitoba. Archibald was a twin to Neil. They were born to Malcolm McNab (1819-1890) and Catherine (Kate) McCrimmon (1829-1869) on 29 May 1864 in Lochiel, Glengarry, Ontario. Other siblings were: Margaret (Maggie) (1857-1947), Christina A (Christy) (b 1860), John Duncan (1861-1903) and Daniel Donald (b 1865). They also had two half siblings from their father's first marriage to Margaret Cameron (b 1822): Alexander Colin (1851-1931) and Catherine (b 1853). Archie was raised in Lochiel. In 1882 he and Neil moved to Winnipeg and worked there for a while until they moved to land near Virden, Manitoba to claim homesteads.

The homestead venture ended badly for both of them and Neil set out for Peace River, Alberta while Archie became a grain buyer for Ogilvie Flour Mills. In 1901 Archie and family were in Whitehead, Manitoba. In 1902 the company transferred him to Rosthern, Saskatchewan and he was still there in 1906. He worked for Ogilvie for 15 years and then purchased interest in a couple of elevators. In 1906 he sold out his elevator interests and moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. From 1916 to 1921 the McNab family lived at 706 Melrose. In 1908 he ran for office and was elected in Saskatoon. He was appointed commissioner of municipal affairs. This began his political career. He ran in 5 different elections and was never defeated. After holding various positions in the provincial government, he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan on 16 September 1936. His term of office expired on 1 October 1941, but was extended by order-in-council. There is a Wikipedia article about his political career. He resigned his post in September of 1944 because of failing health and was granted a leave of absence until the end of February when Hon. Thomas Miller was appointed Lieutenant-Governor.

Edith and Archie had six children: James Eddie (Edgar) (b 1893), Campbell "Spencer" (1895-1982), Verna Kathleen (b 1901), Ernest Archibald (1903-1977), Edith Jean (b 1905) and John Allen (Jack) (b 1908). Archie died on 30 April 1945 and Edith on 24 November 1967. Both died in Regina, Saskatchewan and were buried in the Regina and Jewish Cemetery in Regina.
