A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

DONALD JOHN NORMAN McLEOD

Donald John Norman McLeod was born in December of 1873 in Goderich, Ontario to Donald McLeod and Jane (Jennie) Brotchie (b 1843). He married Annie Campbell on 5 September 1904 in Hamilton, Ontario. She was born on 10 March 1874 to William Campbell (b 1845) and Isabella Duguid (b 1842). Her siblings were: Annie Bella (b 1871), Levina (b 1872), Jessie (b 1876) and Nellie (b 1880). Annie was raised in Hamilton.

In 1906 the McLeod family was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba and they had a son, Donald Campbell born there on 22 June 1906. In 1905 Donald and his Uncle, Daniel William Brotchie, got homesteads on NE and SE 22-33-27-W2, respectively, in the RM of Morris. They came ahead on their own at first and their wives and children followed on 25 March 1907. Donald, Annie and Campbell were enumerated in the 1911 census on the homestead. Annie died in 1911 and after that time Donald hired others to farm his land or rented it.

It would appear that he began working at various jobs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1913. From 1913 to 1916, he worked as an accountant and salesman for C L Tanner Land Co and mostly lived in local hotels. From 1920 to 1925 he was Secretary/Treasurer for Western Granite Marble and Stone Company Ltd. and lived at Apartment 313 or 215, Drinkle Building No 2, 106 3rd Ave South. He disappeared from the Henderson Directories after 1931. A family history can be found on page 370 of Footsteps to Follow: A History of Young, Zelma and Districts which has been digitized on ourroots.ca

Donald's surname was spelled McLeod and MacLeod in various records. Perhaps the spelling of the name changed at some point. The Donald in this tree was the only candidate that we could find in Saskatoon in the right time frame to sign the quilt.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave McLeod Tree.
