JAMES (JIM) McLEAN
James (Jim) McLean was born 7 May 1874 in Aisla Craig, Middlesex, Ontario to Neil McLean (1837-1919) and Flora Campbell (1849-1932). His siblings were: Alexander Daniel (Alex) McLean (1880-1936), Frederick (Fred) (b 1883), Rachel Catherine (b 1884) and Mabel F (b 1887). He was raised in McGillivray Township, Middlesex, Ontario.
Jim married Elizabeth (Eliza) McCallum on 31 August 1901 in Wentworth, Ontario. Eliza was born on 24 October 1875 in Smithville, Lincoln, Ontario to James Harvey McCallum (1850-1913) and Hannah Copeland (1852-1933). Her siblings were: William Murray (b 1873), Susan Belle (b 1881), Nellie Mabel (1883-1959) and Ethel (1888-1968). In 1881 the McCallum family was living in Monck, Ontario and in 1891, Grimsby Township, Wentworth, Ontario. In 1901 Jim and Eliza lived in Grimsby Township. Their first two children, Nellie Mabel (Helen) (1903-1964) and Eliza J (b 1905) were born in Ontario.
In 1906 Jim and family were living on 28-30-12-W3 in the RM of Buffalo, Saskatchewan. On 3 November 1907 James had a homestead grant issued on NE-28-30-12-W3 which was undoubtedly the same land that they were living on in 1906. The 1906 census gave a different RM than the Homestead Map - possibly there was a boundary change. Jim's father, Neil, homesteaded the NW quarter of the same section of land and had his grant issued on 15 February 1909. In 1911 Jim and his family were still living on the homestead, but his parents had returned to Ontario. By 1916 they had relocated to a farm on 37-5-W3 in what is now Sutherland (part of Saskatoon), Saskatchewan.
Jim and Eliza's three youngest children, Flora Hannah (Flo) (1906-1991), Neil Harvey (1910-1991) and James Lloyd (1918-1926) were born in Saskatchewan. Some of Eliza's siblings lived in Saskatoon. Eliza died in Sutherland on 21 November 1949 and Jim on 27 November 1952 in the same place. At the time of their deaths they were living at 154 9th St in Sutherland. They were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.
Nellie married Robert (Bob) Brown and was living in Edmonton at the time of her father's death.
Eliza J must have predeceased both of her parents as she was not listed as a survivor in either obituary.
Flora married Edward Great (1902-1988) and was living in Arlington, Virginia at the time of her father's death.
Neil married Myrtle Larson (1913-2009) and was splitting his time between Saskatoon and Zealandia, Saskatchewan at the time of his father's death.
In all records the surname of this family was spelled McLean. No other candidate could be found for the James MacLean signature. It has been speculated that James may have asked someone else to write his name on the quilt and that they may have spelled it wrong.
This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave McLean Tree.
