THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

MATILDA FAULKNER née JENKINS

Matilda Jenkins was born on 3 March 1842 in Albion Township, Peel Co, Ontario to James Jenkins (b 1814) and Ann Allen (b 1822) both born in Ireland. Matilda had six siblings, Elizabeth (b 1837 in Ireland), Mary Jane (b 1840 in USA), Anne (b 1843), Edward (b 1845), Margrett (b 1848) & James (b 1850). It is likely that James Sr & Ann came out to Canada via the USA leaving Ireland about 1838. James Sr farmed in Peel County, Ontario in 1852.

Matilda was sixteen when she married James Faulkner on 15 December 1858 in Peel County. James was born on 17 March 1834 in Chinquacousy, Peel County to Thomas Graham Faulkner (1786-1859) and Ann Edwards (1794-1852). James had seven siblings, Mary Almeda (1824-1895), John Hamilton (1826-1911), Alexander Ralph (1828-1889), George Proctor (1830-1914), William (1832-1852), Sarah/Serrah (1836-1859) & Simon (1838-1910). James may also have had numerous half-siblings from his father’s other marriages. (Some family trees have the date of Matilda’s marriage as 29 December 1858 but this has not been corroborated).

In 1861, James and Matilda were Wesleyan Methodists, living in a single storey log house in Caledon, Peel County and James was a farmer. James and Matilda had five children, William Herbert (1859-1926), Thomas Henry (b 1863), James Watson (1867-1946), John Wellington (1870-1949) & Frederick Alexander (1877-1967).

James and Matilda lived in Erin Township, Wellington County, Ontario during 1910-1921.

James Watson Faulkner married Mary Elizabeth (Minnie) Ewing (1871-1938) on 2 March 1892 in Dufferin, Ontario. They had three children, Edith A (b 1893), Ethel Verna (b 1895) & James Ewing (b 1898) In 1916-1921, James Watson Faulkner and James Ewing Faulkner were living in Saskatoon.

We suppose that Matilda visited her son in Saskatoon and signed the quilt at that time.

Matilda died on 16 November 1925 in Hillsburg, Ontario. James died on 1 December 1926 also in Hillsburg.
