JEAN HAMMOND

Jean Hammond was born on 18 August 1895 in Lower Drummeny, Donegal, Ireland to Hugh Hammond (b 1853) and Sarah Jane Lyttle (b 1857). Jean had six siblings, Maggie (b 1886), James (b 1887), John (b 1889), Robert (b 1890), Hugh (b 1892) & Sarah Matilda (b 1897).

Jean’s brothers, John and Hugh left Ireland in April 1910 aboard SS ‘Laurentic‘ and arrived in Quebec on 9 May. They travelled on to Toronto and in 1911 John was a conductor for the ‘Iron Railway Co’ and John was a driver for a bakery. Robert followed the next year. By 1916, Robert, John and Hugh were living and farming together on SW 12 34, 17, 3 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

Jean came to Canada on her own in 1913 and found work as a stenographer for the firm of Cruise, Tufts & Lindal, barristers in Saskatoon. At this time she was living at 118 Spadina Crescent. Jean returned to Ireland in December 1916 aboard SS ‘Missanabie’. She returned to Canada in August the following year and resumed her work as a stenographer, but for another law firm - Murray, Munro & Morrison. She was living at 124 5th Ave, Saskatoon in 1918 and at 621 8th Ave the following year.

Jean married Ralph Prescott Stueck (1893-1979) on 16 June 1920 in Abernethy, Saskatchewan. Jean and Ralph had two children, Hugh & Joy. Ralph was a farmer, wildlife photographer and naturalist. Details of his achievements can be seen here.

Jean died on 14 April 1965 in Abernethy. Ralph subsequently married Mary Erner. Ralph died on 2 October 1979 also in Abernethy.
