MYRTLE DEBORAH HICKS née MILLER

Myrtle Deborah Miller was born on 21 September 1892 in Gorrie, Huron, Ontario to James Miller (1859-1915) and Harriett Eunice Ena Casemore (1867-1945). Myrtle had six siblings, Stella Gertrude (1890-1911), Violet Mael (1894-1986), Della May (1897-1987), Hazel May (b 1897), William Casemore (1899-1966) and Alfred James (1902-1924).

Myrtle came to Saskatoon in 1913 and found work as a clerk with J P Anderson, a photographer and was living at 1035 Ave B North. Shortly after, Myrtle moved to 413 26th St and became a photographer herself, working for the Central Drug Store at 222 2nd Ave.

1916 is the last year that Myrtle appeared in the Henderson Directory for Saskatoon. By the 1921 census, Myrtle had married Kenneth Everett Hicks. Kenneth was born on 26 January 1896 in Ontario, possibly Charlotteville, Norfolk Co to Frederick W Hicks (b 1855) and Margaret Jane McKinnon (b 1875). Kenneth had four siblings, Harry Frederick (1894-1976), Merrill Raymond (1897-1976), Neil Laverne (b 1899) and Margery Elizabeth (b 1904). Kenneth’s father Frederick was a school teacher. The family came west to Manitoba by 1901 and then settled in Saskatchewan.

Kenneth came to Saskatoon in 1914 and found work as a helper at Saskatoon Pure Milk Company and lived at University Heights. The following year he had become a driver for the same company. In 1918-19, Kenneth was living at 108 31st St W, Saskatoon and working for the Ford Motor Company as a motor mechanic.

After their marriage Myrtle and Kenneth lived variously at 409 Ave H North and 619 & 537 Ave G South. According to Kenneth’s obituary, he established Hub Tire Retreaders in 1923 which he operated until his retirement in 1958.

Myrtle died on 27 February 1960 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon. Kenneth died on 23 February 1976 and is also buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
