OTTO McELMON HIGGINS and MYRTLE MARY HIGGINS née LAURIN

Otto McElmon Higgins was born on 13 August 1887 in Nova Scotia, Canada, possibly Amherst, Cumberland Co to David Allan Higgins (1860-1939) and Ida A Baker (1864-1890?). After Ida’s death, David remarried to Bessie Belle Miner (1872-1948). David and Bessie had two sons, Harry Hindson (b 1892) and Lester (b 1901). Otto grew up on the family farm.

In 1911, Otto was a telegraph clerk at the railway station in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. It seems he also lived at the station. By 1915, Otto was living at YMCA, Saskatoon and working as a train dispatcher for CNR.

Otto married Myrtle Mary Laurin on 6 June 1917 in Saskatoon. Myrtle was born on 11 May 1896 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA to Joseph Hermas Laurin (1874-1946) and Mary (Marie) Clifford Fortin (1878-1962). Myrtle had one brother John Robert Francis (1900-1958). Myrtle came to Canada in about 1907 and worked as a stenographer before her marriage.

Otto and Myrtle had one daughter Mary R (b 1920).

Otto continued to work as a dispatcher for CNR until 1924 when went to work as a manager for Daylight Electric Bakery at their premises in the ground floor of the Western Hotel Building on 2nd Ave. Otto continued to be associated with the company eventually acquiring the business.

When Otto retired in about 1951, he and Myrtle moved to Vancouver, British Columbia; initially at 3989 Osler St.

Myrtle died on 7 May 1973 in Vancouver and Otto on 13 January 1986 also in Vancouver.
