W H McCULLOGH and Mrs W M McCULLOGH
William H McCulloch was born on 30 May 1864 in Quebec to Hans McCullough Jr (1837-1874) and Margaret Thompson (1840-1922). His siblings were: James T (1862-1925), Mary Ellen (1867-1951), Joseph (b 1868), Anne Jane (b 1870) and Maria Margaret (b 1873). He also had a half sibling who was born in 1860 to his father's first wife, Mary Chambers (1835-1860). It is likely that Mary and the child died in childbirth.
William was raised in Gore, Argenteuil, Quebec until at least 1871. His father died in North Plantagnet, Prescott and Russell County, Ontario, so it is possible that the family moved there sometime after 1871. However, it is also possible that his father just happened to be at that location when he died. Census records indicated that William immigrated to the United States in 1882.
Circa 1889, William married Elizabeth M (Lizzie) Layton. She was born on 19 November 1866 in Ontario to Charles Layton and Hannah Thompson. It was thought that her parents were very likely William "Charles" Layton (1833- before 1871) and Hannah Thompson (1839-1885) who also had the following children: Hannah Alice (b 1868), William Charles (1869-1870) and possibly George (b 1865 and listed in the 1881 census with no relationship status). Because Lizzie did not appear in either the 1871 or 1881 census with the rest of this family, there is no evidence that she was their child. USA census records indicated that she immigrated to the USA in 1881.
William and Lizzie had three children: Myrtle M (b 1890), Roy Layton (1894-1934) and Joseph W (1902-1954). In 1900 and 1910 they were living in Montrose, Cavalier, North Dakota. They immigrated to Canada in 1918 and lived at 318 Main St, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from 1918 until at least 1924. William was a teamster with H L Martin Lumber Company in some years and in 1918 was listed as a farmer in the Saskatoon Henderson Directory. By 1930 William and Elizabeth were living in Snohomish, Washington where they died on 31 May 1939 and 3 December 1953 respectively.

William "Harvey" McCulloch was born on 16 December 1884 in Ontario to William Julius McCulloch (b 1856) and Mary E Ross (b 1863). His siblings were: Sarah Gertrude (b 1888) and Elizabeth (b 1890). In 1891 the McCulloch family was living in Darlington, Durham, Ontario.
At the time of the 1901 census, Harvey was living in Darlington with his Ross grandparents, Alexander and Sarah. He married Margaret "Edna" Ruth on 8 February 1910 in Peterborough, Ontario. Edna was born on 24 June 1882 in Peterborough to James Ruth (b 1855) and Eliza Dryell (b 1854). Her siblings were: William George "Edgar" (b 1880), Amy Velinia (b 1884), Mary Lydia (b 1886), Ernest Arthur (b 1888) and Martha "Irene" (b 1892). In 1891 the Ruth family was living in Otonabee, Peterborough, Ontario and in 1901, Peterborough.
From 1915 until at least 1918 the McCulloch family lived at #8 521 18th St W in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Harvey was an accountant with J H Ashdown Hardware Company. By the time of the 1921 census, Edna was a widow and had returned to Peterborough where she was living with her parents.
There are several other signers who were employed by the J H Ashdown Hardware Company.

In 1918 there were two McCulloch men with the initials W H listed in the Saskatoon Henderson Directory. Neither of them had a wife with the initials M H. No Mrs McCulloch candidate related to the Saskatoon McCullochs could be found with a husband whose initials were M H nor who had those initials in her own name.
W H McCulloch and Mrs M H McCulloch did not sign near each other on the quilt. We suspect that Mrs M H McCulloch may have written her name on a piece of paper and that it was written on the quilt by someone else who misinterpreted a W for an M. William Harvey McCulloch died before the time of the 1921 census. He was listed in the 1918 Henderson's directory, but it is possible that he died in late 1917 and still ended up being listed - if so he may not have been alive when the quilt was being made. He was not listed in directories after 1918 and his widowed wife had returned to Ontario by the time of the 1921 census.
