THIRD AVENUE METHODIST CHURCH QUILT

A CANADIAN RED CROSS QUILT

Another quilt?

A McLEAN and MARIE McLEAN

Ada Lander was born in December of 1887-1890 in England. It is unknown if Lander was her last name or her middle name. She married Hilliard Donald McLean circa 1913.

Hilliard was born on 14 October 1884 in Port Elgin, Bruce, Ontario to Gillean McLean (1856-1935) and Mary Ann (Minnie) Grafton (1859-1950). His siblings were: Wesley Laverne (b 1886), Teressa Beatrice (b 1888) and Flora May (b 1892). He was raised in Port Elgin, Bruce, Ontario.

Hilliard married Flossie Sheils on 11 October 1905 in Port Elgin. Flossie was born on 3 January 1887 in Port Elgin to Andrews Sheils (1862-1909) and Sarah Schell (1864-1942). Her siblings were: Edward George (1884-1898), Jennie Genevieve (1885-1968), Minnie (b 1889), Kate (1891-1972), Vera (1892-1958), Andrew (1895-1960), Edward (1896-1897) and Harris Leslie (1903-1969). Flossie was raised in Port Elgin. She and Hilliard had one son, Floyd Hilliard who was born on 23 March 1906 in Port Elgin. Flossie died from child birth complications on 1 April 1906. It would appear that Floyd was raised by Hilliard's parents until at least 1916 as he was listed in census records with them in 1911 and 1916. In 1911 Floyd and his grandparents were in Port Elgin and in 1916, Calgary, Alberta.

In 1911 Ada and Hilliard were living in Calgary, Alberta and had no children living with them. On 25 April 1916 Hilliard enlisted for WWI in Saskatoon. He listed his next of kin as Ada Lander McLean. At the time of the 1916 census the McLeans were living at 205 Ave H North in Saskatoon and had two children Flora (b 1912) and Herbert Laverne (b 1914). Hilliard was employed as a bricklayer. They were at the same address in 1921 and by then had Floyd with them. Hilliard died on 26 March 1935 in York, Ontario. His father, Gillean, died on 16 February 1935 in York and his mother, Minnie, on 16 February 1950 at an unknown location. Nothing further was discovered about his wife, Ada.

It is speculated that Ada may have been the person who signed the quilt A McLean and that her mother in law, Minnie McLean may have been the person who signed it, Marie McLean, possibly while on a visit to Saskatoon. However, we have no evidence that Minnie ever used the name Marie, so the signers for this signature are in doubt.

Candidates 2

Agnes Neilena Beaton was born on 12 January 1886 in Derby Township, Grey, Ontario to William Beaton (1836-1916) and Janet Rodger (1845-1909). Her siblings were: Janet Lillie (1870-1917), Sarah Annie Willimand (1872-1964), Flora Christina (1876-1961), Margaret Robina (1878-1917), John Hyle Roger (b 1880), James Rowan (1882-1967) and Alice Naomi (1886-1966). She was raised in Derby and married Hector Gillies MacLean in Owen Sound, Ontario on 20 December 1912.

Hector was born on 28 March 1881 in Grey, Ontario to Alexander MacLean (1838-1919) and Mary Boyd (1855-1897). His siblings were Flora Bruce (1882-1964), John Boyd (Jack) (1884-1967), Catharine Fletcher (Kate) (1885-1954), Archibald (Archie) (1887-1922), Duncan Boyd (1890-1969), Stewart (1892-1950), Christina Campbell (1895-1895) and Fitzroy Donald (Roy) (1895-1917). Hector was raised in Sullivan, Grey, Ontario. He was a lumber merchant and had moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan by 1911. He gave that place as his residence on his marriage registration.

Agnes and Hector had three daughters. Dorothy was born in 1915 and died in 2004. She was enumerated with them on Laird St in Calgary in the 1916 census. Mary Alexandria was born on 5 January 1918 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and died in Saskatoon on 5 August 2012. She married Gordon McGillivray McCaul on 25 December 1941 in Saskatoon. He was born on 30 December 1915 in Alsask, Saskatchewan and died on 31 May 2011 in Saskatoon. The youngest daughter was born some time after 1921.

Hector died on 4 May 1951 in Saskatoon and Agnes on 30 May 1966 in the same place. Both were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon.

It is unlikely that the candidates in this tree were the signers because the surname was always spelled MacLean on tombstones and in vital records. Occasionally the names of children were written on the quilt, but in this case we have no evidence that Mary was ever called Marie. If the mother and child in this tree were the names represented on the quilt, it was most likely that someone was asked to write the names on for them and that they spelled the surname incorrectly.

This family tree can be found on Ancestry under the title 3rd Ave MacLean Tree.

D01

A McLean and Marie McLean signed one above the other on the quilt suggesting that they were likely related. Two unrelated A McLeans were located who were living in Saskatoon in 1918, but neither could be found to be associated with a Marie McLean. In one case a mother in law, Mary Ann, was located and in the other a baby, Mary Alexandria was identified.

It is possible that one of these women also went by the name Marie. If you have knowledge that one of the women in the trees discussed below used the name Marie, please contact us.

Also, if you know of a Marie McLean who had ties to Saskatoon or who lived in Saskatoon in about 1918, please contact us.
