JOHN WESLEY MATHERS and MARY EMMA MATHERS née ROE
CLARA THERESA MATHERS and WINNIFRED MAE MATHERS
John Wesley Mathers was born on 12 March 1868 in Morris, Ontario to Robert Mathers (1835-1922) and Susan Patterson (1837-1905). His siblings were: Robert George (1862-1944), Thomas William (1864-1938), Mary "Jane" (1866-1962), Susan A (b 1870), Ann Eliza (1871-1949), Sarah "Rebecca" (b 1875), Adeline C (1875-1957) and David Henry (1879-1970).
John was raised in Morris Township, Huron, Ontario and married Mary Emma Roe in Grey Township, Huron, Ontario on 26 June 1895. Mary was born on 6 February 1870 in Grey Township, Huron, Ontario to Richard Roe (1832-1920) and Eliza Frain (1840-1913). Her siblings were: Samuel George (1860-1953), William Henry (1862-1955), Eliza Ann (1864-1954), Rachel (1868-1895), Susan (b 1870), Alexander (Sanders) (1872-1936) and Adam (1876-1947).
John and Mary had six children, the first four of whom were born in Ontario: Clara Theresa (1899-1942), Winnifred Mae (Winnie) (1900-1890), Wilson Robert (b 1902), Ida Georgina (1904-1975), Ethel Lucille Alexandria (b 1905) and Eva Fern (1906-1981). The Mathers family was living in Belleville, Hastings, Ontario in 1901 and in Whitewood, Saskatchewan in 1906. Their last two children were born in Whitewood which means that they must have made the move from Ontario in 1904 or 1905.
The Mathers also lived at the following locations in Saskatchewan: Regina (1911), Edenwold (1916), 335 4th Ave N, Saskatoon (1917-1919) and 427 7th St, Saskatoon (1920-1937). John and Mary joined 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1917.
John died on 28 January 1920 and Mary on 14 December 1937. Both died in Saskatoon and were buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Clara appears to have moved to Saskatoon before the rest of her family as she was the only one listed in the Saskatoon Henderson Directories in 1916. She was employed as a stenographer for James Richardson and Sons, Grain Dealers and was living at the YWCA. By 1917 she and the rest of her family had moved to 335 4th Ave. Her father also worked for John Richardson as a manager and traveller.
In 1917 Winnifred was working as a clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce. Clara and Winnifred continued to live with their mother until she died in 1937. In 1937 Clara was working for Continental Life and Winnifred at Emmanual College. Winnifred was still listed at the same address as late as 1941. Clara died on 9 July 1942 and Winnifred on 6 July 1980. The location of their deaths was not discovered, but it would appear that both remained single as they were buried under their maiden names in Woodlawn Cemetery.
