EDWARD MAXWELL and EMMA MAXWELL née STANLEY

EDWARD “STANLEY” MAXWELL and LEONARD “WESLEY” MAXWELL

Edward Maxwell was born on 11 Mar 1856 in Billingham, Durham, England to Edward Maxwell (1816-1890) and Elizabeth Wahl (1818-1888). His siblings were: Elizabeth Jane (b 1847), Mary Ann (b 1849), Christopher (b 1853), William (b 1854) and Emily (b 1858). In 1861 the Maxwell family was living in Billingham and in 1871 in Bozeat, Northampton, England. Edward boarded SS ‘Nova Scotian' in Liverpool, England and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 21 April 1884 with a final destination of Regina, Saskatchewan.

In 1891 Edward was living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and was a farmer. He married Frances Emmaline (Emma) Stanley in about 1892. She was born on 20 January 1866 in Osgoode, Carleton, Ontario to James Albert Stanley (1829-1908) and Sarah Young (1832-1883). Her siblings were: Leonard (1857-1935), Annie (1858-1949), Sarah Jane (1860-1921), Robert (1867-1933), Elizabeth Albertha (b 1869) and Mercilla (1871-1901). The Stanley family was living in Gloucester Township, Russell, Ontario in 1871 and Osgoode Division, Russell, Ontario in 1881.

Emma and Edward lived in Saskatoon and in the 1901 census Edward was listed as a section foreman for the railway. An Edward Maxwell first appeared on the roll of 3rd Ave Methodist Church in 1891. A Mr and Mrs E Maxwell joined the church in 1900 and in 1914. It is speculated that one of these couples was Edward and Emma. From at least 1911 to 1930 they were at 108 Spadina Cresent East and for at least part of that time ran a rooming house. They had three children: Mildred "Mae" (1893-1977), Edward "Stanley" (1898-1977) and Leonard "Wesley" (1908-1986).

Edward Sr died on 9 April 1933 in Vancouver, British Columbia and Emma on 26 January 1938 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Stanley was born on 29 September 1898 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He married Wilhelmina Isabel Stanley in about 1921. Wilhelmina was born on 11 February 1904 in Rathwell RM, Manitoba to James Wellington Stanley (1874-1943) and Mary Josephine Snack (1884-1945). Her siblings were: Olga Mary Josephine (1905-1973), Augustine (b 1906), Alfred James (1908-1978) and Vera Catherine (1910-1990). In 1911 the Stanley family was living in Town of Rivers, Manitoba.

By 1916 the Stanley family were living in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Wilhelmina was living at 116 3rd Ave S in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1921 and was still single. At that time she was a book keeper, living with 19 year old Clara Thornton.

Wilhelmina and Stanley had two daughters, Josephine Patricia (b 1922) and Gaetane Vera Mae (1923-1996). Stanley and Wilhelmina must have divorced as Stanley was married to Winifred Ivy (Wynne) Moon by 1933 and Wilhelmina married Richard Weaver Widdicombe on 17 June 1947 in New York.

Wynne was born in July of 1906 in London, England to Charles Frank Moon (1882-1957) and Mary Ann Armstrong (1884-1959). Her siblings were: Charles Mark (b 1909), Bertram John (1911-1952) and Frank Nathaniel (1914-1990). Wynne, her mother, and her brothers, Charles and Bertram, immigrated to Canada aboard SS ‘Corsican' which sailed from Liverpool, England and arrived in Montreal, Quebec on 29 September 1912. They were coming to join Charles in Saskatoon.

The Moons lived at 334 Ave K in 1916 and at 610 31st St W in 1921. In 1933 Edward and Wynne were living in Calgary, Alberta.

Stanley died on 4 March 1977 in Vernon, British Columbia and Wynne died in the same city on 18 December 1985.

Wesley was born in Hanley, Saskatchewan on 21 May 1908. He married Florence Colleen Holmes on 31 March 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Florence was born on 17 February 1912 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England to Harry Holmes (1881-1960) and Florence Baron (1883-1955). Her siblings were: Hilda (b 1906) and Harry (1912-1912). The Holmes family left Liverpool, England in May of 1913 on ‘SS Franconia' and arrived in Portland, Maine on 4 June 1913. They gave their final destination as Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1916 they were living in Winnipeg.

1921 found Florence, her mother and Hilda living in Dryden, Ontario, but her father was not living with them. Wesley died in Toronto, Ontario on 31 July 1986 and Florence died in the same city on 6 September 1996.
